Please Reinstate the Option of Choice to Use the Old Publishing Format
-
I think that this is a genuine insanity. Somebody has lost the plot and it won’t get any better until after it’s become bad enough to make the protest more widespread and include interested parties outside of WP. Almost there :-)
-
WP is relying on a basic fact … most people will grumble and mumble and then just settled down to grim acceptance.
But anyone conversant with “opinion shifts” knows that the few who do speak up are a small represesntative proportion of the general populace. Five people write to the Editor to complain about commercial encroachment on a park, for example …. that five represent a MUCH larger number of people who are angry about the park proposals. . Clever politicians and social “engineers” ( journalists) know this. And none would be foolish enough to suggest that the desenters are a “small minority”. They’re not. They’re barometers of public opinion.
Being fairly seasoned with this issue over the years, I would certainly be taking note of the sheer number of comments here … disregarding the small “skirmishes” between posters, which should be avoided since they divert attention away from the issue. Which is of course that we want CHOICE.
@mudiwamudiwa. A similar issue couldn’t exist with GIMP. Nearly all the earlier versions are still available for download limited mostly by the computer system itself being too old in some cases. I have the newest GIMP and a very old one. I use the old one for its beautifully calibrated font size, which someone thought should be changed to include billboard sized scripts. A lot of us hated that. But we just download the old version. All versions are compatible with each other. No one has ever decided to “disable” anything. That would be plain mean. Meanness seems to have raised its head here at WP with poorly designed “Updates” for both the Stats and the Editor functions. It’s a very sad situation.

@everyone
Let’s be clear and factual please. I made no personal attacks. I said this and I own it:You keep playing it again Sam when the horse is dead and you are beating the ghost of a dead horse.
I am not attacking anyone when saying that. I am expressing my deep sorrow based on my gut wrenching perception of the reality we face. I fear the horse has long since died and beating that the ghost of it will not result in a resurrection.

@timethief: It’s your opinion. I think there are many users who have the opposite.
Luckily. ;-) -
Since we can’t know the actual stats on user responses to the new editor and poll daddy is owned by wordpress, I posted a poll on my blog if anyone wants to vote. It’s worth a try, that is if wordpress don’t delete my link.
We shouldn’t have to go beyond this support forum but there’s no a sneaky agenda happening here.
BTW tumblr sucks. They’ve got the same editor now wordpress are trying to foist on us. It’s for tweeps and selfies, not journalists.

@imperialtwilight …. nice poll. Worked like a charm and I’m happy to cast a vote. This is a good positive response on your part …. Thanks

I am not a professional blogger, but I do take blogging seriously. I have posted to this forum several times. I have also conveyed my concerns to “Happiness Engineers” when I have had the opportunity. They have been polite and helpful but say the new editor will stay, and the old editor will remain accessed only indirectly. (And I say “Tell that to the marines!)
The new editor lacks two features that I find essential: copying of earlier posts, and copying of existing tag lists. Both of these features draw on information already in my web-site, allowing me me to use what I have already posted as a template for new work.
I find the “Beep, Beep, Boop” irritating. I could live with that, but it suggests that WordPress.com is aiming at a market of children and child-like, frivolous adults.
Thank-you, “imperialtwilight” (What a name!) for the voting form. I have voted Option 1. -

Isn’t accusing someone (a personal friend of mine) of underhand tactics (which was not the case) a personal attack?

Not sure how to make a direct reply to your comment Timethief but I’m definitely a different person to Jill. And Angela, for that matter. You may well find a few of us from the same blog on this forum now we’ve been alerted to a way of making our feeling known. But if WP can see that “one person is one person” that’s all that matters.

Beep Beep Bop! Why should we have to go round in circles via the dashboard to perform a simple task, the classic editor worked perfectly well, I am not against any change that makes an improvement but this is just being plain stubborn, come on lets just have the old link back please. On a plus side the debate has led me to forums I didnt realise existed! I’ll be back!!

Voted!
I have also linked this from my own blog. Spread the word. -
I totally agree that the new editor sucks. Don’t get me wrong. I LOVE WordPress. I chose it because it wasn’t dumbed down like Blogger was (back in the day when I made that choice). So I’m sad to see this new editor, one that doesn’t even get all my categories showing in the dropdown list.
Okay… so if people like the new editor; or maybe it needed to be updated to work with phones and tablets, whatever. But why not just leave a handy link (right in that new editor) to the classic one? I know we can get to the classic one thru the dashboard. But it’s a few steps. And it takes time.
= Frustrating
I always start in the new editor, save it as a draft, and then go back to the older editor. Again… just a simple link in the new editor to the old editor is all I ask.
Otherwise, I still love WP! :)
-
Another thought… why not just have a “Choose default editor” option in the settings area? Seems like a pretty simple solution.
-
@epages
Yes – this was suggested many times last year when BBB first raised its ugly head. Wouldn’t even have minded if the default was BBB provided we could choose to use the Classic Editor. Of course it is simple, but WP had other ideas. They grudgingly gave us the cookie option (which was recently removed). All part of their long term plan no doubt.Glad to see this thread gaining momentum again….

@nikkitytom
@galois
@surlybond
@knashermac2009Thanks so much for the feedback.
State your choice re: the new “improved editor” vs the classic editor here
I don’t know how WordPress support forums work. Would non-English speaking members see this forum or a completely different one in their mother language? In all fairness, it would be nice to hear from as many members as possible.
The poll stay up as long as the discussion is open. I sincerely hope it’s helpful.

Voted! Thanks for setting it up. I hope it opens some eyes! :-)

I just voted against the new editor, noticed that everyone is favoring the classic one, so I’m waiting for wordpress to comply to the general demand!
-
Thanks, I just voted to have both editors in place. About the only thing I like about the new one is that you can resize images by dragging. Not precise but sorta cool. Maybe you can do that with the old one too, and I just haven’t tried. But seriously, the old editor is head and shoulders above the new one. I just sigh a sigh of relief when I get back into it.
For those who use Zemanta, like I do, that plugin works much better with the old editor.
I hope WP doesn’t get all haughty and overconfident with some grand plan for phasing out the old editor. Unless they can make the new one just as good, they should keep it. Otherwise, they might be in for a rude shock. When companies get overconfident, authoritarian, and don’t listen to their users, they usually go under after a while. I think this would especially be so with the web, which is all about change.
Some other blogging platform will raise its head, one that listens to what people want. And WP will be a thing of the past… that is, if they act like pricks and don’t listen to the people.
Just my two bits. I still love this thing. WP is the best, by far imo. I hope it stays that way.
A little tough love from earthpages.org. :)
