Please Reinstate the Option of Choice to Use the Old Publishing Format
-
I agree with @nikkitytom. Taking an imperfect product and tweaking it would be OK if there was no alternative. But WP already has an editor which works well and which the vast majority of users are satisfied with. It’s unbelievably foolish to spend time and resources tweaking an imperfect product when there is a workable and trusted product already available.
And, with all due respect to @jeremeylduvall, usage statistics are worthless if they are taken from a system that has been set up to direct users to the Beep Beep Boop editor as much as possible. I would suggest that if there is an observed decline in usage of the Classic editor, that has much more to do with WP channelling users toward the new editor than with users *voluntarily* moving from the Classic editor to the new editor.
-
totally agree with @nikkitytom & @fionamcquarrie
I am a programmer/analyst and I have been developing applications on all sorts of platforms for 30 years. Never would I put out a “new” release that did not have the original functions and features – either in the original format or a really improved version of it. Sure, some things do get deprecated, but rarely. I would never put a buggy version of anything out there as the “live” version and state this is the app we want you to use. Never. That is why it is called BETA testing. You have the buggy, substandard version as BETA until it exceeds the expectations of the original version. period.
And certainly you would never make the buggy substandard version the DEFAULT app for the user who has no way of changing their default.
-
@lizthefair – are any of the Happiness Engineers going to take our complaints more seriously? This has 30 pages and a poll with over 1000 responses, stating that the old editor button needs to come back as a default.
Why can’t this be done? I am a developer myself, and there is no reason why that button cannot be put back. Unless the IT department is just digging their heels in and refusing to listen to the complaints about a buggy editor.
-

Absolutely! WP’s statistics are worthless. And unbelievably skewed. Users are channeled towards the new. And this ruse is appallingly evident in the new stats page …. even if you go BACK to the classic. EVERY time you go to stats from dashboard, you get the New stats and have to scroll down for the old version. Labeled of course “old” rather than “classic”.
If to accomplish a work-around you have to go through the NEW version … then obviously the stats will include that detour. Ridiculous! Does WP really think we are that gullible? This disrespect to long-time professional users is mind numbing.
-
Unless the IT department is just digging their heels in and refusing to listen to the complaints about a buggy editor.
I think it’s also down to the fact that when they introduced the “new” editor last year they found themselves having to acquiesce to the wishes of its users after a similar massive outcry of dissenting voices, and they don’t want to do that a second time.
It seems to be a hard lesson WP are learning about what their users want… :-)
-
@nikkitytom, you never have to go to the “New” Stats page to get to the old Stats page with the map. Always log in on the classic dashboard, click “View All” under the stats module (https://wordpress.com/my-stats/) which takes you to the old Stats page.
I also suggest bookmarking the old Stats page, as well as the WP-Admin. “Add New” to use the classic editor.
-
I do think that management and Staff are aware of what the majority of their users want and need. I do not think those posting here, myself included come anywhere near being representative of a significant minorityt of end user, let alone, a majority.
WordPress.com is ten years old now and powers over 23% of the internet. The Jetpack plugin created parity between WordPress.org users and WordPress.com users but I suspect there’s much more to come.
We know that the redesign work on the editor, notifications, stats, my sites pages, etc. is ongoing, so we can expect future iterations. Given that there are thousands (ten of thousands) blogging on this platform I think it’s pretty amazing that the development thus far hasn’t resulted in major issues. Code changes aimed at achieving the final goal are made here every day and many times every day.
When all the parts are finally complete and married together, I think we will find we have the ability to smoothly and easily manage all of our WordPress sites in one place and to do so using multiple devices.
Until then the missing link isn’t a big issue for me as I can work in the classic editor and use the classic stats pages, so my contingency plan may never be acted upon.
-
@ Dandelionsalad. Of course I have the old Stats page bookmarked … it’s on my toolbar. But that’s just another work-around ruse. However I often want to go back to my main page … and naturally click on “My Sites on the upper Left Hand corner. Which whips me right back to the NEW stats page instead of My Sites … where I have to click twice to get back to the main page. The whole thing is booby trapped. Why should I not be able to simply set my preference without all this flapping around?
And the stats issue is a harbinger of the future for the Editor if WP doesn’t listen to our request for CHOICE. It’s choice we want. Preferably for both functions. I don’t understand why giving a choice should be so difficult.
And in THIRTY pages of this discussion and over 2000 cyber-signatures, we have NEVER been given an answer to the question. “Why can’t we have a CHOICE?”
“I Mua” Forward.

Efforts to diffuse, mock or misdirect discussions away from the petition need to be met with the same consistent, gentle, rational, strong response nikkitytom has been showing.
We need to gain momentum on the petition by promoting it beyond this forum thread. Use your blogs, twitter, facebook, every social media network you’re part of.
As anyone can see from this archive, which receives new complaints every day,

The only course of action is to go beyond this non-supportive forum and make this public.

Of course it is very possible that WordPress have ulterior motives and/or there is something they are not telling us, which we may find out later, or not.
-
You like to constantly remind us how BIG WordPress are and how insignificant, puny, powerless we are.
You need to remember it is WE who make WordPress big. And WE are a MAJORITY.
If given another platform that was preferable. you’d be surprised how WordPress could collapse in a very short time.
Remember that wise old saying, “The bigger they are, the harder they fall.”?
And then there’s that famous story of David and Goliath. Who won?
The little guy.

@imperialtwilight
I am sorry to report that the poll is biased. It lacks integrity and it certainly does not allow my voice to be heard. I’m pretty sure you have read muiscdoc1’s excellent critique but I suggest that you may want to read it again.@aliceharding
What kind of an ulterior motive do you think they could possibly have? I assume the motive for making massive changes is to improve the way the platform functions for managing multiple blogs and accessing the platform from multiple devices. Don’t you think that’s the case? -
@galois
In case your missed it, here’s the link to one of the excellent critiques of the poll that reveals of why the poll is biased https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/please-reinstate-the-option-of-choice-to-use-the-old-publishing-format/page/27?replies=893#post-2332411 -
In case your missed it, here’s the link to one of the excellent critiques…
I read that critique. And I do not agree with the “excellent” word.
P.S.: Yes, I read the 30 pages of this thread and all messages, even those not already in it.
-
@timethief If the goal is to “improve the way the platform functions” across multiple devices. it’s hard to imagine how that could be achieved by replacing functioning, well-used features with buggy features that don’t seem to work well on many kinds of devices.

Just 1 stone brought down a giant.People see through this game and it’s old.
We have a voice. We have power. No social media platform could be successful without us.
I threw my stone along with with the 2255 others and counting.
I would be happy to help reach the goal of 5000.
That petition is the only place we can be heard. If it has bias, it’s bias is that it represents our voices. That’s why I love it being there.
-
quite frankly, since WP has a bias with its stubborn attitude for not giving us a choice. So, I don’t care if the poll has a bias or not – it represents what people have been saying here.
and I do not buy “oh, they are so big” excuse. Seriously, that means the bigger a company is, the more crappier the product that they will release? Nope, sorry. Developers have to deal with multiple platforms and OS levels ALL the time. There is no excuse for this “beep beep boop” editor and I am not confident that they will ever improve on that version.
-
All polls are biased one way or another, be it through the wording of the question and information or the number of options. Even if this one was a simple “Do you like the new editor – yes or no?” poll it would be biased against those who are ambivalent. :-
Anyway, for what it is worth I’ve been promoting this poll on both Twitter and Facebook. I don’t know if it helped at all but any publicity as they say… ;-)
-
I think it was VERY poorly thought out. The evidence is obvious even before you start looking for it. Under the name of the current site you don’t have the option to go to that site, but to SWITCH SITE with the option to go that site underneath that. That is the wrong way around and confusing and totally annoying. People who think illogically like that do not make good programmers.
