“Please set a primary site.”

When I try to write a post, I get a message saying, “Please set a primary site.” When I click to follow the link, it takes me to my account settings, but won’t let me do anything. Is anyone else having this issue, and if so, what did you do?

Hi there! 👋🏼
When I try to write a post, I get a message saying, “Please set a primary site.” When I click to follow the link, it takes me to my account settings, but won’t let me do anything. Is anyone else having this issue, and if so, what did you do?
This shouldn’t happen when trying to publish a post — I tried reproducing this, but I wasn’t able to.
Can you please share a screenshot of what you see when trying to publish a post?
A screen recording would be even better, if possible!

Forgive me, I’m a bit of a noob. I found a page that explained how to make a screen recording, and have done so. But how do I now share that on this forum? Thanks

Hey there,
Thank you for taking the time to create that!
It can be shared via https://snipboard.io/ :)

Sorry, apparently I am not allowed to upload files. Perhaps it’s because I have a basic (free) account.
Here’s what I have:
I click the “write” button, and it takes me to an error page that says “Please select a primary site” with “Account Settings” next to it.
I click “Account Settings” and it takes me to my Account Settings page. My Account information is all blank, and the “Primary Site” space is flashing, as if it’s trying to download something. After a few seconds, an error message appears that says “Failed to retrieve all domains.”
Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the additional info! Usually when an issue like this occurs, it can be traced to an expired (or broken) login auth cookie stored on your local web browser. Essentially when you go from one page to the next — like how clicking the Write button takes you to a new page where you will do your writing — and you no longer appear to be logged in to WordPress.com when you land on that page.
It looks like you are using Google Chrome as your browser, so with this in mind I would like you to try the following
- clear your cache and cookies based on the steps google recommends here: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/32050
- Also make sure you are not blocking any “3rd party cookies” as explained in that guide as well.
- If you continue to have loading issues after completing those steps, I would like you to try another browser instead, like Firefox. Are you able to proceed if you use a browser other than Chrome?
Thanks for the additional info!
