    Hi there,

I took a look at your site and found that your theme is retired. This might be the reason why the promotional ad is not working as expected. A retired theme will no longer receive updates with new features. While a retired theme should continue functioning on your site, we cannot guarantee it will always work well with the ever-evolving WordPress software.

When a theme is retired, it is not removed from your site. You may continue to use it as usual. However, you may consider switching from a classic to a block theme to ensure your site has a modern look and feel to its design.

You can learn more about this here: https://wordpress.com/support/migrate-from-a-classic-theme-to-a-block-theme/

I see that your site is a blog, and I found some blog-type block themes that you can check: https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/subject:blog
If you need help with the switch or to achieve a similar result to what you have with a new theme, let us know.

Since you’re on a WordPress.com Premium plan, you also have access to direct support.

    Hi Josefhtest,

    Thank you for your reply.

As you mentioned, this theme is retired, so it can’t catch up the new features. But my blog has run for a long time and I hope to keep the looking as the same. Is there any other way to change the strange ad on my website header? Or, I can only let it go?

    Hi there,

Thanks for following up. I just checked your site and the promotional banner is now displaying properly. That said, since your theme is retired, we can’t guarantee that it will continue to work well with ongoing WordPress updates or that all features will remain compatible.

The only way to try adjusting the banner in your current theme would be through custom CSS, but that requires a plan with the CSS upgrade or CSS add on and could also affect other parts of your site, so it may not work as expected.

For long-term stability, I recommend switching to a newer block theme. This will ensure your site keeps up with new features and updates, and we’d be happy to help you achieve a look that’s as close as possible to your current design.

    Hi Josefhtest,

Thank you for your reply again.

Yes! I found the promotional banner displaying properly when I log out my account. That means it is gook looking for all readers. That’s great!

It doesn’t matter if it is improper only from my side when I login my account.

But I found a new problem, maybe it’s also caused by the retired theme. My website https://tastemylifeh.wordpress.com displays well on my iPad but looks like the theme doesn’t work on the iPhone. As you know my website header is red banner with a picture of fireplace. But it is blue without the fireplace on my iPhone. It worked well before, and I am not sure when it has this problem.

About changing the theme, I worry about the two things:

    1, I have created this blog for many years and I hope to keep the looking;

2, I worry about the content may not fit into the new theme.

So it is difficult for me to make the decision.

Thank you for your patience and very helpful explanation.

It looks like there was an old setting on your site which was set to show a simplified theme for mobile browsers. I’ve turned that off for you but if you’d like to toggle it back on you can do so at https://tastemylifeh.wordpress.com/wp-admin/themes.php?page=mobile-options

    Hi Jordesign,

Thank you very much for your help. My site looks great on my iPhone now!

I went to the link you gave me and found the setting, I have never known it before. I thought it is an important feature, but I can’t find it by myself without your link. It looks like located in the “theme” settings, but how to get the “Mobil option” page? I can only find out the “color selection”.

Thank you again for your patience.

    That’s such great news!

That feature is quite an old one which was essentially retired (although the setting was still there, albeit without a link). Nearly all themes these days adjust nicely for smaller screen sizes – so a specific mobile theme isn’t really needed. If you ever do want to switch back to it again, you can always use that same link :)

    Hi Jordesign,

You make it very clear that I understand it now.

It will be great that I can use the link in the future.

thank you very much for your detail teaching.

    Hi folks,

In the second post of the topic, @phoenixnestca said, “Correction: The blog I need help with is https://tastemylifeh.wordpress.com.”

For me, using the latest Firefox browser, while logged into my WP.com account, on that site the banner WP.com ad above the header is not fully displayed, nor even half visible, being mostly hidden behind the admin bar. Only perhaps the bottom third is visible, just the bottom points of the WordPress.com logo and the bottom third of the “Start here” button are can be seen. All of the text in the banner is hidden. It looks the same when using Google Chrome.

I’m viewing the site on a desktop PC, with Windows 10, and 1280 X 1024 display resolution, but when I tested that URL on a tool that shows how it looks on a variety of screen sizes, it looked the same, except with mobile phone screen sizes.

  • Unknown's avatar

I forgot to finish that last paragraph. With the testing tool, on mobile phone sizes, the banner is completely hidden behind the admin bar.

    Hi musicdoc1,

    Thank you for your testing.

I found the problem with my safari when I logged in, but when I logged out, it showed perfectly. According to your testing, it displayed improperly in Firefox and Windows when you logged in. How about when you logged out?

  • Unknown's avatar

Oh, I mean logging in WordPress.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi @phoenixnestca,

When logged out, whether in Firefox or Google Chrome, the banner ad is displayed fully, as one would expect.

  • Unknown's avatar

Looks like the problem is to WordPress user only.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, it appears so. However, I’ve no idea of others will get the same results that I did.

  • Unknown's avatar

    I meant “if others.”

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes the banner displays correctly to visitors looking at the site who aren’t logged in to WordPress.com. Once I log in, then the banner is obscured. But if that is the only issue you face whilst using a retired theme then I guess things could be worse. At some point all of us using retired themes are going to be forced into updating so it may be worth spending a little time building a test site to experiment with newer themes so you are prepared with potential alternatives for when the time comes.

    Hi @phoenixnestca @musicdoc1 @themagicrobot

I can confirm that our marketing banner is overlapped by the admin toolbar. I’ve also checked more than ten WordPress.com websites, and it doesn’t have the same banner issue as tastemylifeh.wordpress.com.

However, this only happens when you’re logged in with WordPress.com. Public visitors should be able to see the full marketing banner.

Please feel free to create a new site to check and test our newer themes for a more compatible theme with our modern features and additions within the plaform: https://wordpress.com/support/themes/changing-themes/
