Why do I get an error when importing?

  I am trying to upload a file from a wordpress blog file name:
  wordpress.2011-05-08.xml.download

  I am trying to upload the saved backup to my new blog but I get this error message

  ”Please upload a valid WXR (WordPress eXtended RSS) export file”.

  what am I doing wrong?
