Pls HELP! Stats dropping over 50%, looks like mostly from search engines…

Stats dropping since Nov 28 – I contacted Google, (can’t understand what they said) they said: “Google reposts over 3500/tag/pages are indexed from your site. Generally its better not to have WPtag/pages (equiv on other CMS) crawled/indexed because they usually produce a lot of duplicate content in the same indexable content as already found on other pages, I wonder if this duplication has been tolerated until it reached a cut-off point was reached and “adjustments” made?” – DOES THAT MEAN I NEED TO CLEAN UP MY TAGS? When Google searches are they only searching on tags/categories or are they looking at content? Are tags/categories more for someone searching to find something and not for Google to show search results? My stats are down over 50% which is heartbreaking after working nearly three years on a daily post… hard work to have come crashing down… can you help? I feature artists on my blog, so I use their name as a tag (so there are many different ones), same with house plans (I create a tag with the name of the house plan) – SHOULD I NOT be doing this? I appreciate your help, I am at a loss…

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

When you use relevant categories and tags on your blog posts, that makes it easier for WordPress.com users to find your posts under those tags in the Reader. It also helps a visitor to your blog find related posts that you’ve written about those topics.

When Google looks at your blog, they look at the full content of the blog (not just categories and tags). If you want a better idea of how Google sees your blog, you might want to set up Google’s webmaster tools. That will help you identify any issues that are impacting your blog’s ranking in Google search results. We have instructions for setting that up here: Webmaster Tools

Google takes a lot of different things into account when ranking sites in search results, so I can’t say for sure if your tags and categories are causing problems here. You may also want to check to make sure that the information you received is from a Google staff member and not just another user (who could just be guessing).

Please let me know if I can provide any further help with this. :)

    Rachel, I went to google’s webmaster tools…

    Hi there,

    You’re very welcome. I’m glad I could help! :)

Under SEARCH APPEARANCE/STRUCTURED DATA it shows 1,472 items with errors. (ahhh, this is Greek to me)… could that be causing a problem. I have screen shots if you need them…

Your first step if you find errors in Webmaster Tools is to take a look at the information Google provides about those errors. You can find some information in their support pages here: https://support.google.com/webmasters/

If there are specific errors that appear repeatedly, you’re welcome to share them here and I can see if there’s something we can do on this end to help. If you want to share screenshots, you can upload them to your Media Library under Media > Add New in your dashboard, or you can use an online service like Snaggy.

Rachel, I have added the screenshots to my media library… you are the best, thank you!

Thanks for sending those screenshots. :)

I see that some of them mention an error related to authorship. Google requires a connection to your Google+ profile to verify authorship, so if you connect your blog to your Google+ account you may be able to resolve those warnings. (However, this is not required on our end; it’s just an option if you want to verify authorship to Google.) We have instructions for doing that here: Connect Your Google+ Profile

I also see that most of the errors are due to a missing “updated” field. Currently, as far as I know, that field is not included on any WordPress.com blogs. You’d see the same error on any WordPress.com blog, and it isn’t anything new. This may affect the rich snippet in Google search results, but it shouldn’t affect your blog’s ranking.

Please let me know if I can provide any further help with this. :)
