plugin? easier document management

I want to be able to insert lists of documents (meeting agendas, for example). I don’t need to embed the document, and that is what I keep coming up with when I do a plugin search.
I do not offer a huge site – just an elementary school, but the media uploader is clunky and I don’t much like all my documents mixed with all of my images.
So I guess I might be asking two questions….
Is there a way (plugin?) to separate the media folder into documents vs. images?
Is there a plugin that lets me EASILY and quickly insert the test and link for a Word Document or pdf?Open to other suggestions, but documents don’t need to be paid for or hidden, and should be readily available to the public.
