Plugin for <Read more…> on posts?

so i found out that i need to put the quicktag <!–more–> after a certain point on my posts to make a “Read more…” hyperlink at the bottom of my posts on homepage. thing is that this begins to become a hassle
What i was wondering was if there is a PLUGIN that will automatically shorten posts on my homepage and put a “read more” or “more” hyperlink thing at the bottom of my posts?

Plugins can’t be used here on wordpress.com. Using the more tag has to be done manually for each post. If you use an offline editor then it might be possible to save a template that includes the more tag and use that as the basis for each post. I do all my posting online though so I’m really no expert.
