Plugin is being blocked by theme !important in most font style sheets

Plugin is being blocked by theme !important in most font style sheets. How do I know where to change it or should the ‘!important’ statements be taken out of everywhere? I was told it’s an incorrect coding practice. Please help! Please!

  • Hi –

It is best to avoid using !important when editing CSS, that is true. Can you tell me what site you’re working on? Share a link. Thanks.

    Hello lizkarkoski,
Thank you so much for your reply. https://lifeafterhitech.com
You will see my Smart Slider 3 Pro slider displays two images. On the eclipse image, the text beginning with “Career Transition…”. That was edited from the dark purple you see live now to white like the “LifeAfterHiTech” below it to the left. I have been removing and resetting the slider multiple times. I reached out to their developers that saw the “!important” code all over the place but not sure which file it was in. So, I just went to my dashboard / Theme Editor / and the CSS files and see the !important everywhere. Scared to remove it (even with my excellent backup procedures).
I look forward to your reply.

  • That is a self-hosted WordPress.org site, which we really can’t help with here.

To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities: http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

WordPress.org has complete documentation for self-hosted/installed versions of WordPress.org at https://wordpress.org/support/ and support at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

    Hi macmanx,

Thanks for your reply. I really didn’t know that, but I’ve tried to ask (days ago) at the other forum and since no reply, I thought of going to the theme area to ask since it’s related to the theme. I’ve searched and searched. To no avail. So I guess until I can afford to pay someone to help, I’m on my own. :-(
    I understand.

But I know that my issue is valid, it’s not good coding practice to use “!important”, especially everywhere in the theme. Maybe I’ll reach out to the theme people, that’s one avenue I didn’t check. :-)

    Thank you,
    -Brenda

  • Hm, on second thought, if the problem is with Smart Slider 3 Pro, you might want to ask over at https://smartslider3.com/help/ instead.

HI, thanks for the reply. I did start there thinking it was their plug in. Their developer investigated my site and found that the theme was using the !important statement and informed me. I looking in my theme editor and saw in the CSS files where the statement was. I want to download the files, copy the original locally, and edit the files, but was afraid to, if it wasn’t the issue. But I could just return to the original CSS file downloaded. But there are a lot of instances of that statement.
I’m not a php developer. This is the beginning of my third week doing my blog. So, I’ve come along way from concept to ‘soft launch’ in that little time. I don’t want to mess up what I’ve done so far. I may just live with the dark purple color inside the image and get over it, LOL!

  • Hi Brenda –

What I suggest before you make any big changes, or investigations, is that you always back up your live site first. That way, if you break it, it can easily be restored from the backup files.

Another suggestion is that you have a test site with the same setup so you can try things out before putting them on the live site.

    Hi lizkarkoski,

Great idea to have a test site to work with.

    Thank you!
