Plugin to hide posts or categories from front page

Trying to figure this out is nerve-racking.

I’m trying to get certain posts to not display on the front page. Basically, we’re running a collaborative blog of scholars and graduate students and want a way for people to post without flooding the front page. For example, if one of our editors decided to create an assignment for his students to blog with us, we wouldn’t want that content “featured” on the front page. It would be perfectly fine to go to the Category page and read through what students wrote just to fulfill a homework requirement, but that’s not what we want the public face of the blog to be.

Searching the help forums and Google hasn’t yielded any suggestions. There were a few vaguely similar help requests on the forums that were either never responded to or the answer was basically “you can’t do that.”

The closest current solutions seem to be less-than-ideal. The posts can be private, visible only to admins, which defeats the purpose of blogging altogether. Or you could sticky LOTS of stuff to keep things you want to “hide” off the front page, but that sort of defeats the purpose of the sticky, as you’re now not able to keep your very best content featured.

The quickest solution would be to improve the “Post Visibility” plugin by adding a tick-box that says “hide from front page.” This would basically be a simple version of some of the plugins that do this (e.g., WP Hide Post, many other plugins). Those plugins are usually more robust (even letting you hide posts from category pages, etc.).

I’d love for WordPress.com to go even further, adding the functionality to keep posts from certain categories (or with certain tags) from the front page. That would be a much more robust way to blog, especially for blogs that are collaborative or that want to showcase certain content on the front page without resorting to a “static page” approach.

Realistically, this would make theme-oriented“sneeze pages” useful.

But for now, I’d settle for WordPress adding a Hide Post plugin or just beefing up Post Visibility to make it easy to hide posts and categories from the front page.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)
