Plugins

Hi there. I’m trying to use WordPress for a final project for a public history class. Some of my other classmates have been able to use and download plugins despite having a free account, but every time I go to the plugins page I’m prompted with having to upgrade to a business account before I can download any plugins. Is there any way I can use plugins without upgrading to a business account?

    Hi @mmcgeary76fc5e6492,

Your friends probably are using an open-source self-hosted copy of WordPress software that you can also download at the link down below:

    Download

With the open-source copy of WordPress running on shared hosting from providers like Godaddy, you will be able to install plugins to your site.

You are currently in a managed WordPress environment and here you won’t be able to add plugins unless you are subscribed to WordPress Business Plan.

    WordPress comes in two flavours:

    • Self Hosted Open Source WordPress.org
    • Managed WordPress.com

If you are unsure about the difference between self-hosted open-source WordPress.org and managed WordPress.com, go through the following article:

    Hope this helps.

    Best :)
