  • Hi there,

You’re confusing us with the WordPress software. We’re WordPress.com the hosting provider.

Here on WordPress.com, you need to be on the Business plan to be able to install plugins. You can however use the free WordPress software and choose a different hosting provider where you can install plugins even at their most basic plan.

Here are a few hosting recommendations:

As a newbie, I am aware that at least some plugins should be free but it does not show up that that way. Plugins like Astro and Elementor should be free but I keep getting the ‘upgrade to business plan for literally all of the plugins I try. I have installed the software as well as used the online platform and was wondering if there is something I am missing. Most of the tutorials I see uses the online platform and I observe that Elementor is free for them

To clarify, there are two different “WordPress” things at play here:

    1. WordPress.com which is a managed WordPress hosting provider.
    2. The open-source WordPress software (from WordPress.org) which you can install at another hosting provider.

You can find more information here about the differences between WordPress.org software and WordPress.com here: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

The articles you’re finding are directed towards the second type of WordPress – also known as “self-hosted” WordPress.

WordPress.com limits what you can do on our managed hosting platform, which is why we advised you that in order to install any third-party plugins (which both Elementor and Astro are) you need to upgrade to the Business plan here at WordPress.com. It doesn’t matter if it’s free to use or if you have to pay for the plugin, you need a Business plan to install them here at WordPress.com.

If you want to use the WordPress software on your own hosting platform (we have some hosting recommendations here), then you can install any plugin at no additional cost over your hosting costs provided the plugin itself is free to use.

The Business plan will provide everything included in the Personal and Premium plans, plus the ability to use SEO and analytic tools; manage automated back-ups and options for an activity rewind; and install plugins and custom themes. It also comes with full live chat support 24/7, and an increased maximum of 200 GB for media storage.

You can learn more about each of these features here: https://wordpress.com/support/plan-features/

You can also review this guide on the WordPress.com Business plan to help understand the value of its included features: https://wordpress.com/business-plan-value/

    I hope that clarifies things.
