Plugins and Side Bar Removal

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I have attached my blog. Now the first thing I would like to know how to remove is that side bar which is supposed to be for navigation.

The part where it says Archive, recent posts, categories, meta and search bar etc. etc.

The second problem I am having is adding in plugins, i cant find the plugin section – no option on the side bar on the dash board. What i am trying to do is find the plugin section in order to change my text size. Its beyond me why there is no text size adjustment option but anyways…

    Thanks for any help

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • The list of links along the side can be edited by logging into your site’s dashboard and going to Appearance–> Widgets and changing the selections under Primary Sidebar.

While plugins are common on self hosted WordPress sites, due to security concerns, they are not available on WordPress.com. There is more info regarding WordPress.com and plugins here:

As for text sizes, which text are you trying to change? Header type text? Or the words in your posts/pages?

Hi Rootjosh, thanks for your response!

I have deleted all the widgets but the Archives and Meta still show up.

As for tesxt sizes – the words in my posts / pages mostly but I would want to try adjust headers size too

    Thanks

  • So it turns out that you’ve got to add in a blank text widget. I’ve done that for you and you can see that archives and meta are gone.

However, if you want to remove the whole sidebar area, that is going to take the Custom Design upgrade and some CSS.

    Thanks.

I would like to remove the whole sidebar area as I do not plan on using wordpress like a blog. I’ll make a few articles but the sidebar navigation just wont be necessary and would rather prefer the extra spacing that I will get.

By Custom Design upgrade do you mean upgrade to Premium ($100 a year)?

CSS – custom design is $ 30.- but they have the store screwed up so the last time I looked it was not showing at all – staff-ozmodiar should be able to help you get only that if you want while we wait for the store to be fixed

  • Auxclass is correct, I’m referring to the Custom Design upgrade.

However, he is also correct in pointing out that the store was being odd earlier today. If you log into your WordPress.com site’s dashboard and go to “Store”, you should see the Custom Design upgrade. If you do not, let me know.

staff-ozmodiar – the store is still “odd” as you say – and I checked 3 blogs just in case there was a caching issue – is not – the store is a massive up sell – way worse than a used car salesman

The Store has been like this for at least a week. So to me it smells like either it was changed to ward off the dreaded numerous “I need a refund” threads during the holidays, or a permanent change is coming.

    @daynewilliams-

If you log into your WordPress.com site’s dashboard and go to “Store”, you should see the Custom Design upgrade. If you do not, let me know.

If you don’t see it, you may be able to purchase it directly from this page: http://store.wordpress.com/premium-upgrades/custom-design/ If you have more than one site here, make sure to select the site you want to apply the upgrade to from the dropdown list that will appear when you click on the “Get Custom Design” button.

So for $30 I get rid of the toolbar

If I created a new blog or changed my template, will I be able to remove the toolbar again without paying another $30

  • Unknown's avatar

It’s $30 a year per blog. If you start another blog, the upgrade doesnt’ apply to that unless you buy the upgrade for that blog too. And since CSS is theme-specific, you will have to tweak it whenever you change themes.

Ok thanks – will look into it

And sidebar, not toolbar, correct? Even with the Custom Design upgrade, you cannot remove the Admin bar or the theme footer credits. Doing so can get your site suspended.

However, we do have several built-in features that were inspired by many popular plugins. You might find what you want by searching for it at http://en.support.wordpress.com/
