Plugins & customization
-
I am considering charging for certain articles on my blog. It seems like I need to upgrade to the Premium version ($99 per year) to support paywall plugins like Cleeng. Does anyone have experience with this?
I’d like to be sure I get it right if I’m going to invest a few hundred dollars in subscriptions & marketing. Thanks!

That’s not correct. See here for details of all 3 plans http://store.wordpress.com/bundles/
Note that the free plan and the Premium plan do not allow you to upload your own themes or plugins. WordPress.com blogs cannot be equipped for eCommerce transactions unless they have the Business upgrade. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/ecommerce-is-now-available-on-wordpresscom?replies=1
If you need a site that requires a custom theme or plugins — e.g., if you want to be able to sell things directly from your site, or if you want to install discussion forums — a self-hosted WordPress site might be right for you. WordPress.org offers free software that you can install on a web server. You can upload and install themes and plugins, run ads, and edit the database. Self-hosting sounds like a better solution. I like the editor and access control for multiple authors but that’s about all I get out of the blog software. If I set up a self-hosted site do I still get WordPress upgrades & support? It looks like a great dev community that I would hate to lose but I’m not sure it’s worth $300/yr.

If you self host you will need to get help at WordPress.ORG they have a forum like here, but they support the .ORG software –
we only help with the WordPress.COM hosted blogs here
you will need to register at WordPress.ORG but you can use the same email as here because the forums are not related

I want to install the Yoast SEO plug in but the install guide implies my Dashboard should have a Plugins option – mine doesn’t (I’m using the free WordPress package). Do I need to upgrade to get this option of installing plugins??

Please read the thread you posted in. There is no upgrade here other than the $30,000 a year VIP program that allows you to add plugins. Additionally, if you search the forums for SEO you will see that Wp.com blogs have more SEO than any plugin can give a WP.org blog. You do not need any SEO plugins; you are already better off.
