  Can you actually get plugins and so forth for wordpress blogs which are actually wordpress hosted?

  Rather than being unhappy, why not say what it is you are trying to do on your WordPress.COM blog? There are some very clever and innovative people in the forums and perhaps someone can come up with a solution.
