Plugins on iPad
-
Hi everyone.
I am very new in this business and I hope I can find some guidelines in this wonderful new community.
I have an iPad from where I am building my site. I tried to look for plugins but nowhere on the dashboard or the WP menu could I find the plugins. Usually I understand it should appear under appearance but I could not find it there either.
Than my next question is why does my iPad won’t allow me to download plugins. Every time I try it says that Safari cannot download file.
Please replay as if you are talking to a kid who has no clue what he is doing! I need very clear instructions, otherwise I wouldn’t get it
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi roeyklein,
Welcome to WordPress! This support document WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org helps to explain why you cannot find any functionality to enable plugins from your WordPress.com blog’s dashboard.
If you are interested in more customizations than what are offered by the hosted version, as well as extending your site’s functionality with plugins, a self-hosted site might be more suited for you. Check out the WordPress.org site for more information.
Best of luck to you on your new site!
Martin

That sucks…!
Wordpress.com doesn’t really offer much! I was relying on getting more features from plugins or writing my own coding in the future, of course I just joined WP a few weeks ago and I didn’t know anything about it.So is it possible to change to .org with out paying extra money?
And if I do change than what it means for my site. Would I have to rebuild everything? Is there no way of getting around it? I mean the features I have available right now are really limited
-
Btw this still doesn’t answer my second question… How do I know that I would be able to download plugins on the iPad when I have .org
I thought the problem is with iPad -
is it possible to change to .org with out paying extra money?
No, hosting for a .org site typically runs $100-200 a year. You will also need to buy a custom domain.
If you don’t tell us what features you need, we can’t help you. MOST things are doable here, you just have to use something other than plugins. If you’re this new to WP, then writing your own code is not realistic.

Hi roeyklein,
So sorry about the problems you are having. It is possible to change to a self-hosted site (WordPress.org) as raincoaster has pointed out, but you would need to purchase a hosting account through a company that supports WordPress installations. The good news is that the WordPress software would be free. There are many hosting options out there and WordPress is supported by the majority. Since the account will be hosted on a server, plugin functionality would be driven from there so using the iPad wouldn’t matter as far as plugin functionality is concerned. Files including plugins will be saved remotely on your server account and can be accessed via the hosting account dashboard.
Once you have the hosting account setup, your existing content can be transferred over. This support document explains the process Export Your Content to Another Blog or Platform.

@roeyklein, I made the assumption that you would use the custom domain that you already have – bicicross2014.com. I forgot to mention that, in case you are wondering about other costs to self-host.

First of thank you both Raincoaster and Martin for the support!
Well the more I am reading the more i understand it would be better for me to transfer to .org
Since I already have my domain i wouldn’t need to pay extra for that… Than I can find hosting for 7$ a month.
I am reading this:
http://wpresstic.com/differences-between-wordpress-com-wordpress-org/
They also explain how I can transfer all my data into the new hosting and for free. I hope it’s true.I am still not rushing to change… I think I am going to wait till I meet someone in person who understand more than me in those issues and can help me make the choice. There is no rush.
It sounds like there is a big competition between .com and .org
Raincoaster, what features are you suggesting? Let’s say for instance I want open a photo gallery on one of my pages or I want to add a slide show… And I want to do it with out buying a premium theme for 99$. If later on id like to publish some adds on my web how do I do that.
From what I am reading .com is very limiting and I’ll have more freedom if I move to .org of course the question for me if I would be able to manage it at my novice level???

To move your content you need to create an XML export file of your content. It will not include the theme as they cannot be exported. See 3 below.
1. Hire a web host http://wordpress.org/hosting/
2. Set up a WordPress.org install and equip it with a theme and plugins.
http://wordpress.org/themes/
http://wordpress.org/plugins/3. Export your content out of your WordPress.com blog http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/ and import it into the install.
4. Purchase a site redirect upgrade from wordpress.com
http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/ or if you have domain mapping then update the nameservers http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-management/5. Transfer subscribers and stats. See http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/moving-your-subscribers/
6. Set your wordpress.com blog visibility to private. To change blog visibility to private go to > Settings > Reading scroll to Blog Visibility and choose option 3 . See the guide here http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/
Alternatively you can purchase a Guided Transfer and Staff will do the move and set up for you http://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/
NOTE: WordPress.com and WordPress.org have different log-ins and run different versions of themes with same names. If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there and receive advice from WordPress.ORG bloggers.

There is no upgrade your can purchase here that allows you to initiate advertising contracts yourself on your free hosted WordPress.com blog.
You cannot post any advertising on your blog here at WordPress.com. There is only one advertising program called WordAds at WordPress.com and it’s for blogs on their own domains. You apply to WordAds by asking for an invitation. You wait a long time.
WordAds Staff check out your blog and if and only if it qualifies they contact you and implement ads on your blog.
http://www.wordads.co/
http://wordads.co/signup/Aside from a blog being accepted into WordAds no blogger initiated advertising, retailing or reselling the work or products created or services provided by anyone other than yourself is allowed on free hosted wordpress.com blogs. E-commerce transactions via shopping carts and the like cannot be conducted on free blogs from and being free hosted by WordPress.com. Paid content and/or sponsored content is not allowed.

http://en.wordpress.com/tos/There is no upgrade you can purchase from WordPress.com that changes any of that. If you do require an ecommerce site, advertising, paid or sponsored content you can hire a web host and get a free software install from http://wordpress.org

Alright dreary hold your horses…
Remember what I was saying about being new here… Now what’s a XML export file… Regarding the theme it doesn’t matter I can create a new one.So from what I understand the export doesn’t cost if I do it manually. Since I haven’t tried yet I have no idea what it means but I surely don’t want to pay the 123$ for an expert who are these guys:
And why are they doing it for free?

I’m not going to recommend features or workarounds if you don’t already know what you want. That is a complete waste of time. Just get started blogging and when you hit a roadblock do a search of the forum to see if the question’s been asked and answered before and if not, ask it. You don’t even know what you need yet.
-
-
Raincoaster, calm down!
I am blogging and I am running into roadblocks and therefore I am asking. And you have provided good help so why the hostility? -
Anyway I think I have gotten all my answers for now.
It great to have so much responses in such a short time. Thank you all!
-
I’m not hostile. You shouldn’t read emotion into technical forum questions and responses. Trust me, if I were hostile there would be no question about it.
-
Hi roeyklein,
Not a problem at all, and just to confirm what you asked in your post above, if you do the transfer yourself via a Manual Export versus the Guided Transfer, it is free.
