plugins – this is incredibly frustrating
-
I have now spent three days on the internet trying to figure out how to add a plug in. I have downloaded filezilla and that is all I can do. If I understand the situation correctly I have to pay for a domain address in order to use this facility? Please can someone explain in simple language as though to a TOTAL IDIOT exactly what I need to do…..
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

All support docs that apply to your blog are found at http://support.wordpress.com
http://en.support.wordpress.com/?s=pluginsIf you want FTP access and to install plugins or third party themes into a site then you will have to hire a web host http://wordpress.org/hosting/ and set up your own WordPress.org install.
There is no FTP access and no blogger installed plugin capability on any free hosted WordPress.com blogs.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/See here for a full comparison WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org
http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/There is no upgrade you can purchase here that provides FTP access and the ability to install plugins and or any third party themes.
WordPress.com built-in plug-in functionality includes (but is not limited to) the following: http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/#plugins-on-wordpress-com

Instead of farting around on the internet for days, the next time you have a question go to http://support.wordpress.com/ and type in the subject of your question. You get this:

So now can anyone explain to me why I used WordPress to get a domain name and paid for it and it seems I have to go to someone else to get another domain name?
Really once again I am totally baffled by this process.
Guys I have spent hours on these forums and I am really trying to understand this and believe me I am not the only one – these forums are filled with very frustrated people who just get shunted around with no straight answers. -
Hon, all we do is give straight answers all day long. In the case of TT and me, for eight straight years.
No, you do not have to go to someone else to find a domain name.
Go. To. The. Support. Documents. http://support.wordpress.com/ Right there on the main page is the link on how to add a domain name. If you already have a domain name, http://bettyab24.wordpress.com/ , why do you want another? If you want a custom domain, just click the link on the Support Documents and follow the instructions. It costs $5 for the domain and $13 for mapping it to your blog. Costs are per year.
-
I have bought and paid for the domain already. So now how do I load plug-ins. I have filezilla and have no idea what to put where. It asks for HOST. do I put in this domain I got from WordPress: bettyab24.com and my wordpress user name and password? Because I have already tried that and it rejects it. I am sure in the IT world you guys know exactly what is going on but out here we are all fumbling in the dark….

You can’t install Plugin’s at WordPress.COM
What functions are you wanting? There are many Plugin’s built into your blog as Widgets and Short Codes.
Before getting hung up on Plugin’s let us know what functions you need, don’t get Plugin envy. If you are having trouble here, you will have a ton of trouble with a WordPress.ORG install
-
At last – someone finally understands my problem! I read an article which said that WordPress SEO is not all it is hyped up to be and I need to install XML site map. This is done via a plug-in. My blog is not being picked up at all by google no matter how detailed my tags are.
-
Stop reading what you’re reading: it does not apply to your blog. They are talking about WordPress.ORG blogs.
Your blog is not being picked up by search engines because a) it is brand new b) you have virtually no text and as far as I can tell your images have no metadata.
WordPress.com SEO is much better than WordPress.org SEO and you don’t need to install anything. Your site map is already built in.
-
Thank you – just one more quick question and then I will stop bothering you. How do I add metadata to my images?
-
Read each link THREE times please
http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2013/03/22/seo-on-wordpress-com/
http://dailypost.wordpress.com/2013/04/11/seo-and-your-blog/
http://dailypost.wordpress.com/2014/01/31/grow-traffic-ebook/WordPress.COM & mapped blogs here do very well with SEO. All you need to do is some basic good blogging practices
You have a 6 day old blog – it takes 4 to 6 weeks for new sites to be indexed by search engines if you have content worth indexing
-
When you upload images, fill out everything. Description, file name, alt text. Everything. That’s your metadata.
-
thank you so much for your help. It is all now absolutely clear to me where to go from here.
@auxclass – thank you again – you completely understood my problem and put me on the right track immediately – those links you recommended were very helpful and completely on topic. You are a star! -
-
just cause you are talking about plugin, i would need just one. i’m writing a travel blog, so i would really love to have a map, in which i can mark with a colour the visited countries with the rest in white. :)
sorry for my english, is not my mother language -
@gorgialeontini

@gorgialeontini – you can do a bit of that by sticking pins in a standard Google Map – or finding a map you can work the colors yourself & a photo program to fix the colors or add notes or boxes to the map
One thing to keep in mind here, for the staff to add functions the functions need to be used by many many bloggers to justify the work to add a function, and that applies to existing Plugin’s even, they need to be vetted for security and then maintained over the years
