Plugins won’t update or download
-
I am trying to download a plugin to back up my website before migrating to a different host, but after updating a bunch of my plugins, I can no longer download nor update existing plugins. Here is the error message I get when I try to update:
Update failed: 504 Gateway Time-out The server didn’t respond in time.
When I try to download a plugin, the “install plugin” button says “installing” shortly followed by “update failed.”
Please help!

Hi there!
Sorry to hear about the issue you’re facing. Unfortunately, we are unable to help since your site isn’t hosted by us at WordPress.com. It’s using WordPress.org and is hosted by Namecheap, a different hosting service provider.
There are some differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org. If you aren’t sure about them, please check the following page that explains it: WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org.
You’d want to contact Namecheap support to see if they can help. If they refer you to WordPress support, please post on the WordPress.org support forum here.
On a separate note, may I know which platform you’re migrating to? Have you considered switching to WordPress.com? You can check out our plans and pricing here, and follow our instructions for importing an entire site to WordPress.com here. We’ll be happy to answer any further questions you have regarding this.

Hello.
I am having a very similar problem, where I cannot download or update any plugins (update failed -1). however I am hosted on wordpress.com I believe. any ideas?

Hi @janiksittampalam, I checked your account and see that one of your sites (goodconsumersociety.com) is on the WordPress.com Business plan and has several plugins installed.
If that’s the site you’re referring to, please let me know which plugins give you that error message when you’re trying to update them.
-
yes that is my site. I get the error with any plugin I try to update or install. I have tried it with Elementor Pro, Dokan, Litespeedcache, Mailpoet, Starter Templates.
An error also appears when I try and install new plugins -
Thanks for that information. This seems to be tied to a recent bug that we found. Please update each plugin on it’s own, excluding Elementor Pro from the mix. That is where the issue is happening.
I also want to mention that your business plan grants access to live chat support. That is the fastest way to get help with your site, and happens in real time. Here in the forums we are async by nature so resolutions can take longer. Of course we are happy to help here if that’s your preference but I wanted to make sure you knew about live chat support since it is a feature of your hosting plan.
Select the live chat option if desired from https://wordpress.com/help/contact/

Unfortunately, the updates still fail, even when all the elementor plugins are deactivated.
also i only discovered this issue when i tried to add a new plugin (WC vendors)

I am also having this exact same issue. I am hosted on .org but watching this comment thread to see if a solution is presented. I can not update any plugins, individually or otherwise.

Hello @janiksittampalam,
Good news! We’ve fixed the issue.
It looks like the plugin: Starter Templates which is supplied from theme developers, was blocking the updates of plugins, including it’s own, creating an un-updatable loop.
It doesn’t look to be WordPress.com specific but will also affect other WordPress sites, that are with other providers.
Thankfully, we have an internal fix which I’ve just deployed onto: https://goodconsumersociety.com/ and so you should be able to update all plugins via Plugins > click Update on a plugin.
Are you able to confirm you’re able to do that?
Many thanks.

Hey there @pictoapples ,
I am also having this exact same issue. I am hosted on .org but watching this comment thread to see if a solution is presented. I can not update any plugins, individually or otherwise.
I’m really sorry to hear this.
Currently as it stands, it would be the hosting provider / or the theme developers to provide an fix.
I believe Brainstorm force have released an updated version of this plugin – but it’s essentially down to the hosting provider to find out a way to deploy that update – which is where we run into the loop I mentioned previously.
Thankfully, we do have a fix for this here at WordPress.com. (Historically, with these sorts of issues that can be widespread, we do provide workarounds/fixes where we can).
It’s possible to migrate your site over to WordPress.com, using our new migration plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/wpcom-migration/ onto a business plan, and we could run the same fix for you. :)
This is a run down of some of the features we provide in that plan: https://wordpress.com/support/plan-features/business-plan/#what-does-the-business-plan-include
I hope this helps and is useful knowledge.

Thank you! I have had to deactivate Starter Template and can update all of the other plugins now. Starter Template is not working, however.
-
Hey @pictoapples
Yes that would be correct. Once it’s reactivated, you wouldn’t be able to update other plugins including that plugin also.
Glad to see you managed to update the rest of the plugins. :)
If moving over to WordPress.com is of interest, please let us know if we can help with that. :)
