png image missing transparent background

Sorry to ask this question again, as I have read lots of the same query, but even after doing everything suggested in the other threads, I’m not able to resolve the problem.

I have created an image in Photoshop, with a transparent background. I made sure the image is exactly the same size as the WP image size (142 x 150). I have saved it as a png file. But the image is still appearing with a white background once I upload it into my blog.

I have also tried removing the image size from the code, as was also suggested, but nothing seems to make a difference.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there. Are you sure that when you saved it in Photoshop the background was, in fact, transparent? I’m not asking you this because I think you’re stupid, but because it has happened to me (in Inkscape, not Photoshop, so please don’t ask how to check it in that program ;-) ). I sometimes make the background opaque in the colour of my blog background to make sure the colouring is all right and then forget to set it back to transparent before exporting. That could have happened here as well.

If you’re willing, you can post a link to the image in your media library here and I can also take a look at it for you. In your media library, click on the image to edit it and look for the box title Image URL. Paste that URL into the forum and I’ll be able to see the original image you uploaded.

Hi kokkieh. You made me doubt myself so I’ve just double checked and the original image is definitely on a transparent background. Here’s the link to the image in the media library https://cottagesupperclub.files.wordpress.com/2015/01/calender-new1.png

It’s really bugging me as I’ve tried all the fixes I’ve read on the forum but nothing is working.

  • Shoot! Your blog is private so I can’t access the image via that link. I’m going to go ahead and tag this for staff so they can check this for you – they’ll be able to access the image and see how it looks on your blog. Please be patient while waiting for them to respond.

Thanks. I tried to be clever last night and do a screen cap of the blog page with the image on it, import it into Photoshop, and clone the page background to fill in the white background of the image. It turned out fine on the amended image, but when I uploaded it on my WP page, although the majority of the whitebackground was now filled in with the matching page background (yay!), the image had a random white border around it (boo!) which I simply couldn’t get rid of. That was only going to be a bit of a work around anyway (if it worked) so back to the old drawing board and waiting for a more technical explanation and solution….

Everything you’ve said so far makes me believe that PS is using a matte around the object even though the background is transparent (as kokkieh said).

Not having PS puts me at a disadvantage to check this, of course. I do have PSE11, but rarely use it to create graphics. I can explore this more later if someone else doesn’t come up with some other reason sooner.

Hmm. I don’t think so Jennifer. I created the image from scratch and ensured that it was just a single layer with no mattes or layers or anything unusual.

A friend pointed me in the direction of this thread: Why are my .png files not transparent? « WordPress.com Forums (which I had totally missed in all my searches, and trying a combination of clearing my web browser cache, and adding the style=”background:transparent;” code to the image seems to have fixed it.

Oops – sorry. Didn’t add the link as a live one.
