PNG's transparency flips to white when post image is clicked to view

I generally upload appropriately optimized PNG’s with transparency (see recent media upload “A bad day for the black swan”). I set my pictures so that clicking them opens the actual file. I do this because in the past, when a person clicked on the file, it opened on a black background which defined my collages’ irregular edges.

Something has changed somewhere because now, when I click an image in a post, it opens on the black background, but the transparency becomes white.

    It looks horrible.

This has changed in the past few weeks…

I have also noticed that the default action when clicking on my media images USED to open the file itself. Now, it opens the picture in a stripped-out post page. Is there somewhere to change the default action when images are clicked?

Hi there, sorry about the transparency issue, I’m looking further into it.

As for what your image links, you can set it yourself when inserting an image: either none, file URL, or image attachment post.

The transparency issue is still happening. Any luck figuring it out? Thanks!

Hi there, it is still on our developers’ list to investigate to address, so no news yet, sorry. We’ll let you know as soon as the status changes. Thanks for your patience in the meantime!

Hi there, I have an update for your question, but it might not be what you want to hear.

Turns out that this background image issue is something introduced in Firefox 15. The browser now displays a gray matte behind transparent images when they’re viewed standalone, and it also adds a white background to transparent images in this case.

As this is a Firefox feature and not a bug on our end, there is nothing we can do to address it.

One workaround would be to image link hrefs point to the attachment page, which is not affected since in that case the image isn’t standalone.

If you are interested in the technical details, the Firefox bug in which this was tracked is here, and you can read some discussion of it here.

Thank you for researching it. I posted a comment on the discussion. Not sure if it will make a difference, but if I render something transparent, I expect the transparency to be the same color as the background…not a different color. Why anyone would think rendering transparency a different color than the background is perplexing.
