Podcast Format and Length Feedback

  • Unknown's avatar

I am going through the Intro To Podcasting course, I’m brainstorming on the format and length of my first podcast, and looking for feedback.

My podcast will be called Relearn To See. It will be about improving eyesight naturally based on the Bates method of natural vision improvement.

    Audio Only or Audio/Video

On one hand, I think it should be only audio and video, to cover all my bases, but, I do hear that video is much more work, time and energy. And it will be quite a steep learning curve. I’m wondering how well audio only podcasts do? That’s pretty much all I listen to. For me, video is distracting and I can’t watch it and do other things. I like how audio is more personal. And, people tend to skip through videos and not watch the whole thing, but will often listen more fully to audio. And, I will have a blog, which will include video, where I will demonstrate the natural vision and Bates method practices.

I’m also wondering, if i just do audio, what is that like when interviewing people. I like seeing the person that I’m talking with. I think a video call is more natural than an audio call, or when interviewing people for audio, does the interviewer use video conferencing, but just not save as audio only?

    Format

I see the format as mostly interview. I will interview people who have improved, or are in the process of improving their eyesight. The purpose is to give a supportive space for people to talk about their vision journeys, which usually involves more than just the eyes. It is often a complete paradigm shift in one’s life. Improving vision is not a universally accepted possibility in society. Hearing from everyday people may help make this more commonly and widely known.

I will also do a panel format once in a while, having more than one person on at a time, probably experts in the field.

And, I will have some solo shows, but the interiew will be the main format.

    Length

Realistically, I’m thinking around and at least 30 minutes. I want people to listen to the whole episode; and I want to have the time and energy to produce each episode. I am the sole person making my website and will have a blog and newsletter too (which I have not I haven’t published yet) and which I have never done before.

    Frequency

Weekly. I want people to make a routine habit of listening each week, to look forward to listening each week. Still, this will be a lot for me to produce, but that’s why the 30 minute length was chosen.

Along those lines, I’m thinking my blog and newsletter should also be weekly, so they sync up.

Thank you in advance for any thoughts and feedback!

  • Hey there,

I think you have some great thoughts here! As for tackling audio and video, I would generally recommend starting with just audio. Video adds a lot of complexity to the production of the podcast and many podcasts are audio-only. Plus, there is no reason you can’t add video at a later point if you decide it is a good fit for your project.

I think the interview format sounds great. There is no reason you can’t conduct the interviews in a video call, but publish them as audio. You could even record the interview as a video and then publish snippets or highlights as a video without committing to an entire video podcast episode.

💡TIP: When interviewing digitally, have each member of the conversation record their audio locally, this way you are not using the degraded audio from your communication platform and it creates a backup in case some audio is lost, or the internet disconnects.

I think 30 minutes is a good length, not to short but not too long. And you can always revise this format or ask from feedback from your audience.

Weekly is a great cadence, though I will say that consistency and quality are more important than speed or quantity. Make sure you are choosing a timeline that works for your schedule and pacing. If you need to give yourself more time to start such as every other week, you can always produce more shows, or do bonus content. It is much harder if you are in over your head or burnt out to take a step back and produce less often. (Not that you can’t do that.)

    Hope this helps!

Thank you for the feedback, much appreciated!

I like 30 minutes to start. Makes it feel more doable than something longer.

I like the idea of recording the interview as a video, then having the choice of both or just audio, and the video can be useful for other things.

Weekly sounds like a lot for me to do, not sure if i can. I sure do like weekly podcasts. I get use to them, expect and look forward to them. But, starting at a less frequent pace makes sense, easier to pick it up than disappoint people by slowing down.
