Poetry – need to remove space AND indent 2nd line at same time
-
I am formatting poetry and usually indent every other line. Specifically I need to indent the 2nd line AND remove the space inbetween the line at the same time. I know: Shift+Enter removes the space in between the lines. And I know this HTML code indents the 2nd line only verses the entire paragraph: <p style=”margin-left: .5in; text-indent: -.25in;”> These are both good and work, but now I need to perform BOTH actions at once. Can someone please give me the combined HTML code to accomplish this? Thanks!

The paragraph tag is adding extra space between lines here:
<p>I want to follow the kind of preacher</p> <p style="margin-left:.5in;text-indent:-.25in;">Who, to his students, makes a fine teacher.</p>For a line break with styling, use the span tag:
I want to follow the kind of preacher <span style="margin-left:.5in;text-indent:-.25in;">Who, to his students, makes a fine teacher.</span> -
Or use the solution suggested here:

Something odd is going on. I am now reading margin-left:.5in;
which is a thing I’m sure I didn’t type!I always use px for margins or padding. I don’t understand what happened here.

Thank you both so much! It works and you made it really easy to understand, especially your post 1tess, as you used my own example on my site that I could just copy and paste.

@jessiejeanine
That is good and you are welcome.But as Panos pointed out the code should be like this:
I want to follow the kind of preacher <span style="margin-left:28px;">Who, to his students, makes a fine teacher.</span>I might have made a mistake? Though it seems what I showed you works well.

@jessiejeanine: The code you originally pasted (positive left margin, negative text indent) is for hanging indentation; that is, indenting all lines of a paragraph except the first. No point using it when you only want to indent a single line.
@Tess: Or like that (same result):
I want to follow the kind of preacher <span style="margin-left:28px;">Who</span>, to his students, makes a fine teacher.
