Point subdomain to teachable.com (CNAME)

Super confused. When I search courses.theproductiveauthor.com, it says it’s unavailable, then when I enter it online, it goes to my site: theproductiveauthor.com. So, if I want to point a subdomain to teachable.com, how do I do it, or what am I missing?

    I wish I could show a pic but I can’t.

I get this error on teachable.com (when I searched to point to theproductiveauthor.com: We couldn’t verify your domain. To set it as your custom domain, you’ll need to create a CNAME record with your domain registrar and point it at Teachable. For instructions on how to proceed, click here.

I found these instructions https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-subdomain/#scenario3 but they are totally confusing:

Once you have the correct CNAME, in your WordPress.com domain: [Huh? How and where was I supposed to do this?]

Add the CNAME record to your domain
Go to your Domains page and click the domain you wish to edit.
Click Name Servers and DNS, then DNS Records.
Click Add New DNS Record [okay, but I already have three records there, is that okay?]
In Type select CNAME. Enter the correct CNAME in Name. For example for tumblr sites, you’ll need something like this:
tumblr alias of domains.tumblr.com [so is it a CNAME or an alias? I feel like this is describing two different things as one thing. If not, what alias do I use? theproductiveauthor.teachable.com? or what? What is the point of the “alias”; what is it even?]

    Thanks!

This was resolved. I just tried things until it worked. I don’t even know if I could explain what I did, so thanks to anyone who helped behind the scenes.
