pointing domain
-
I want to make sure I’m doing this right. I was planning on designing my site in WordPress.com and already own a domain, but since building and designing the site will take a few weeks, I don’t want my domain to be down in this time. Is this simply pointing the name servers to WordPress.com as shown on this page https://wordpress.com/support/domains/map-existing-domain/#change-your-domains-name-servers? Or am I missing something?

You certainly can get your site set up here before switching your domain over!
When you sign up for a new site, we give you a free subdomain (*.wordpress.com) that you can use to start building your new site.
Here’s a guide that will help you migrate your site to WordPress.com:

Thanks so much for the prompt reply! Yes, I plan to get a business plan for this domain, but as I started going through the process of creating the dummy to send to my site designer, only two options were given — using/buying your own domain now or using the one with WordPress.com. I’m used to guided setups telling me along the way what can and cannot be undone/changed later during the process. I hope that makes sense.

Thank you for that feedback! You are more than welcome to select a free name, like iheyhewstaging.wordpress.com. That can be changed later, and you can transfer or connect your real domain to it when everything is ready.
