Pointing my domain name to shopify subdomain
-
Hi,
I am inputting the following in the domain manager:
CNAME autodiscover emilijeanvintage.shopify.com
A 204.93.213.45
to get my domain name purchased on your site (emilijeanvintage.com) pointing to my shopify hosting,. However I am unsure why it won’t accept the format of the above settings. Can you please advise me of the right settings to put in these.
Thanks,
Una

Hi there,
The CNAME part is correct, but the A record section is not correct. It requires a subdomain in order to work (such as “A site 204.93.213.45” in order for “site.emilijeanvintage.com” to point towards that IP address).
Unless you are trying to point your entire domain emilijeanvintage.com towards shopify.com? If so, we will need to make those changes for you.

Hey thanks for getting back to me :)!!
I am trying to get the entire domain (emilijeanvintage.com) to point to to my shopify store:
http://emilijeanvintage-com.myshopify.com/
and when a user arrives at the shopify store they see emilijeanvintage.com in the address bar.Do you think you guys would be able to set this up for me?
Thanks a lot,
Una

Heya,
I believe that I can get that sorted out for you, but I just want to ask a quick question first: The IP address which you gave me before (204.93.213.45), is that the IP address which they gave you for your account? Have you set things up so that your account, emilijeanvintage-com.myshopify.com, is set up to have your domain emilijeanvintage.com?
If so, let me know and I’ll go ahead and point your domain over and it should work just fine in a few hours! If not, there should be directions within shopify on how to configure your account to have a domain. You’ll want to do that first!

Yes 204.93.213.45 is the ip shopify gave me yes.
and yes I have set up my shopify account to work with emilijeanvintage.com – just did it there.
So if you could the domain to shopify that would be great.
Thanks a lot for your help!!

OK, you’re all set! Your domain is now pointed at the IP 204.93.213.45.
Keep in mind that this change can take a few hours to fully propagate throughout the internet, so it may take a while for you to see this change.
Also, I saw that you had an MX record (Mail Exchange) record on file for your domain. Did you have email working for this domain? If so, I can transfer that record over as well. As things stand right now, if that was working, it will not anymore.

Hey,
Thanks a lot for doing that. It’s working now!
I also updated the MX record – I’m using Google Apps for business so pointed it to their mail server.
thanks for your help!!

Hey there,
The MX record which you’ve put in will not be sufficient for Google’s mail to work. Google requires 5 MX records in order for their email to work correctly. Plus, that DNS interface is no longer the one which is active for your domain. Any changes for your DNS will now need to be made by us.
I’ll be happy to make them for you though! Just send over the MX records you get from Google and I’ll enter them in for you! :)

Hey,
these are the mx records I got from google:
1 ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM
5 ALT1.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM
5 ALT2.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM
10 ASPMX2.GOOGLEMAIL.COM
10 ASPMX3.GOOGLEMAIL.COM
http://support.google.com/a/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=174125 is where I got them from. Also, when I go to http://www.emilijeanvintage.com it works fine
but when I go to http://emilijeanvintage.com (i.e. no www), it doesnt redirect me to my site – just to a shopify page not found site.Is it possible to redirect the user from http://emilijeanvintage.com to http://www.emilijeanvintage.com automatically or do I need to deal with shopify about this?
Thanks again for your help – I really appreciate it!!
Una.

Hey there,
I’ve gone ahead and set up your MX records, so they should start working soon!
In regard to your site working for www but not without, that means that you have likely setup your site at shopify to have the domain “www.emilijeanvintage.com” instead of just “emilijeanvintage.com”. You should go in and change that to be without the www. It should work OK with or without the www if you set it up without the www but if it is set up WITH the www, it will only work that way.
You can verify this with the support folks at shopify.
