If I point my existing domain to a wordpress.com site will that work?
Can I use it in stealth formate?
Or do I have to buy a new domain from wordpress.com? -
Mapping an existing domain costs $13. annually.
In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from. If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog.
See here for mapping an existing domain that you already own http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades is where you do the primary blog set up knowing it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

Hi Timethief,
Thanks for that information. Is there any advantage to having your domain registered with wordpress over another domain register like http://www.netfirms.ca. Netfirms is less expensive? Any advice?

I chose to purchase through WordPress.com because the domain is only $5 per year and the mapping is $18.
-
That came out wrong. I meant to say that the $18 includes the $5 for the domain name. I don’t have to renew in two places annually; I can renew both at the same time here.

I am staying with my existing domain. However, what is the benefit of mapping? I understand it is a $13 annual charge. What does that do for your site? Thank you for your reply. Peter

If you don’t map the domain, it doesn’t send people to your blog at all. It goes nowhere.
