pointing wordpress.com domains SCREW UP

I think other wordpress.com users should know just how badly things can go wrong if you uprgrade to your own domain name (without that .wordpress.com at the end).

I bought two domains from wordpress.com, then I decided I wanted to do more with my blogging and move up to the hosted version that is wordpress.org. I signed up for hosting with godaddy.com and that was fine. Now came what SHOULD be a simple procedure. godaddy supplied me with the names of their servers. I duly filled in the appropriate forms for wordpress/automattic asking them to point both of my domains to these godaddy servers.

Simple, right? I get a verification email from support at wordpress.com telling me they’ve received the instruction. And in just a few hours, ONE of my domains is pointing at my godaddy server and I can get on with installing the all-singing, all-dancing wordpress.org. BUT the other was nowhere – in limbo – I look for it and find it’s ‘parked’ on an Automattic page. I check on the domain manager at Automattic that everything is in order – yes, right name servers for both domains. So how come one went and one didn’t?

THREE DAYS LATER (their estimate is either 4-6 hours for .com or 24-48 hours depending on which page you read).

I finally solve the mystery of my Lost In Space domain name. When WordPress/Automattic asked for the nameservers I wanted to change to, they DID NOT ask what the IP address for those servers was. Today I find out (through godaddy, whose PHONE SUPPORT has been excellent throughout) that my lost domain has been directed/updated to the WRONG IP ADDRESS.

Because of this, I’ve lost my website for several days longer than I should have which doesn’t sound such a big deal. But it came at the worst possible time, because I featured in a newspaper story which included a link to that website. A link which was meant to bring families together. Which has been a dead link for no other reason than somebody’s incompetence at WordPress/Automattic. I have sent queries from their support forum at Automattic (twice), emailed [Email Removed Please Do Not Feed The Spam Bots] twice. I received NO RESPONSE. Today I emailed them again giving them, in BIG BOLD TYPE, the correct IP address. Who knows if they will respond to this?

As soon as this debacle is resolved (if it EVER is!) I’m transferring my domains to another company.

Did you look in your spam folder? It’s quite common for replies from Automattic to go there.

No replies to Spam folder or anywhere else, I’m afraid.

Emailing is a low priority for the staff, try using teh contact form instead http://support.wordpress.com/

raincoaster, I have used that contact form. Twice. No response. As well as email. Believe me, I have tried everything and every way to resolve this. I even called Automattic in Arizona – and I live in the UK!! I was told that it was godaddy’s fault. Well it turns out it wasn’t. Although their lack of response is irritating, it’s not the main issue. The main issue is that they screwed up the DNS for my domain by pointing it at the wrong IP address. To me, that’s unacceptable.

I sent you an email a little bit earlier today about this. I also checked in our ticket system and it looks like we did reply to you (as recently as just over 24 hours ago). Either way, I’m happy to help you get this resolved and look forward to your response to my email.
