Policy re. abandoned wordpress.com sites?
-
I have a site name I’d like to use, but it’s already taken by a site which was created 7 years ago and never updated since. Does wordpress.com ever close such sites and make the name available for use by others?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If a WordPress.com site was deleted more than two years ago there is the possibility of re-using the address https://en.support.wordpress.com/recycling-blog-names/
However if a site was created by someone else and hasn’t been deleted, even if it contains no content then the answer is no. There is no time limit on WordPress.com sites. The owner may decide to utilise it one day. I have two empty unused sites that I may or may not use in the future. I would be less than thrilled if WordPress.com gave them to someone else.

You cannot register a site URL that has already been registered and there is no expiration date on any on .wordpress.com blog URLs unused, reserved or otherwise. Note that in these cases the blog’s owner rarely responds to comments if they are open or to contact information on the site but you can try that if you wish to.
Note that Staff will not breach the privacy policy and provide you with an email address if you cannot make contact with the owner.

https://en.support.wordpress.com/private-information/If you wish to you can register a domain via a domain mapping upgrade because it does not matter what the underlying .wordpress.com address is when you are domain mapping.
