The issue is that some fonts do not support language specific characters. It is frustrating, but fixing it requires the font author making the decision to make changes to their font to support those languages.
Your best options on WordPress.com would be to add the Custom Design upgrade and choose a different font. Or, you could test out different themes to find one that uses a font where that language is supported.

The Gentium Basic font (which is used here!) don’t support these characters, but fortunately it just has to be turned off per GlotPress:
http://translate.wordpress.com/projects/wpcom/themes/big-brother/pl/default?filters%5Bterm%5D=on+or+off&filters%5Buser_login%5D=&filters%5Bstatus%5D=current_or_waiting_or_fuzzy_or_untranslated&filters%5Bpriority%5D%5B%5D=1&filters%5Bpriority%5D%5B%5D=0&filters%5Bpriority%5D%5B%5D=-1&filter=Filter&sort%5Bby%5D=priority&sort%5Bhow%5D=descIt is aleready turned off in the suggested translation – but the string is not validated yet. So you don’t have to buy the update. Someone just have to approve the translation to turn off the font for your language.
But there is an even better solution:
Automattic could add an option in GlotPress to change the subset for the font, because Gentium Basic is supporting Latin Extended which contains all of these polish characters (which you can see here: http://www.google.com/fonts#ReviewPlace:refine/Collection:Gentium+Basic/Script:latin-ext )This has been done in some other contexts, for example here:
http://translate.wordpress.com/projects/wpcom/pl/default?filters%5Bterm%5D=subset&filters%5Buser_login%5D=&filters%5Bstatus%5D=current_or_waiting_or_fuzzy_or_untranslated&filters%5Bpriority%5D%5B%5D=1&filters%5Bpriority%5D%5B%5D=0&filters%5Bpriority%5D%5B%5D=-1&filter=Filter&sort%5Bby%5D=priority&sort%5Bhow%5D=descAll the best,
Torsten
