Poor Formatting of Upcoming Events using shortcode
-
I just discovered the shortcode for upcoming events
[ upcomingevents "icalurl" ]but the formatting I get on my site, most notably the horizontal spacing of the 4 columns, is much more cramped than the example given on the support page (e.g. “summary | Description” on my page looks more like one phrase, whereas there is enough room in the example on the support page for the date to be written out full-length on one line). The only way I can get this to look even remotely passable is to remove the sidebar from the given page, but even then, it’s not great (& I hate to lose my sidebar!).
Are there any parameters that you can pass to the shortcode for upcoming events to control the spacing, arrangement and/or formatting of the table? I’d also be interested in being able to set things like “first line in bold” or otherwise using markup to format the table.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards,
JB

I’m another user, and was looking for answers to a different question when I saw your post. Do you have a custom CSS upgrade? If you do, you can style the shortcode, adjusting the font weight, vertical spacing, etc. Each of the shortcode elements have event classes (such as “event-description”) – for example, knowing this allows you to apply particular styles to all the event descriptions. I use my Firefox browser development tools to determine HTML tags, ids, and classes. These tools can be very helpful in determining what can be modified, and how.
I think your site is beautiful, btw – very balanced. I think that if you don’t have the CSS upgrade, and don’t want to pay the annual fee for it, it’s no great loss.

Dear L.S.C.,
Thank you kindly for your response: I’ve been very frustrated trying to get the functionality I want. The ical feed doesn’t render what is in my calendar at all (it inserts “n”s and doesn’t respect line-breaks). I don’t have the CSS upgrade, but was considering it because I’m so tired of trying to hack around these things; however, I may just move off of wordpress altogether if I go that route.
If you have a moment, could you show me what the parameters looks like for description? I’ve noticed that certain basic html codes allow you finer control over existing features, it’s just a matter of knowing what they are.
And thank you kindly for your comments about my site – I don’t get compliments of the sort often (ever!). I’ll be sure to have a look at your own site, too :D
All the best,
Rax

Another suggestion is to try another ICal feed. I’m not happy with the way a google calendar feed gets rendered on my site (I get stray blank spaces). I tried a Zoho calendar, which works better.
I have several sites, nearly all associated with my religious congregation. They are very disparate; some have clean lines (like your lovely site) and some are loud and gaudy. I love the CSS upgrade!
