Poor Image Quality on Posts
-
I have noticed that the images I load to my posts directly from the computer look grainy (If that is the right word). If you click on the image, it looks fine, Yet if I happen to have my photos stored elsewhere, such as Picasa, and insert using the link, the pictures look nicer without having to click on them.
My latest post shows this:

Thank you very much. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Are you resizing the image on WordPress? Usually the quality worsens when you resize through WordPress.

The best practice is to downsize your images to a resolution of 72 and the pixel dimensions you want, using an image editing application, then upload and insert these versions selecting the “Full-size” option. See here too:

Thank you for your replies and links I think I now have more questions. :)
I use GIMP for my photo editing. When I want to put something online, I crop out any excess than usually shrink it down anywhere between 400-700 pixels across depending on the image. ( I always take my pictures using the highest quality setting in case I want to print any. ) I just checked one of the images I recently edited and the settings show it is already at 72 pixels per inch. Is that the same as the resolution?
What does it mean to resample an image?
I do not mind if wordpress shrinks a photo to fit the theme, but I am not sure how many people would click on it to get to the one I want them to see. So how do I find out what max. size I can post the images without having WordPress resize it? I use the Rusty Grunge theme. I see the main column width is 538. Is that as large as the image will go, or is there a border and the image needs to be smaller?
I hope my questions are making sense.

Yes, your 72ppi is the resolution.
Resampling means changing the resolution.
Maximum image width per theme:
