Pop up ads / spam on my blog
-
A visitor told me that both time she tried to visit my blog she got a pop up ad for a game that she had difficulty trying to close. She said it is not happening at other sites.
I asked several other friends and most had no problems, but one other person got a notice saying that someone was trying to put a pop up on her screen.
I have a free wordpress.com blog.
Any ideas why this is happening or how this can be fixed?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, WordPressdotcom does not use pop-up advertising.
When I visit your above site at howtogeton.wordpress.com I do not encounter any pop-up ads.
The likely reason for the pop-up advertising someone might see is that the computer involved is infected with adware or malware. There are several free programs that one can use to scan and remove infections from one’s computer, but the only one I have experience with and can recommend is Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
Also, outdated web browsers are a menace to their owner. An updated web browser should be used.

Jennifer,
Thank you so much for your reply.
Three different people now told me they are getting constant pop ups on my site and no where else. :(
It does not happen to everyone. I asked 15 people and 12 had no problems.
There is no way that all three people have malware that affects just my site.
What else can I do?

I’ve tagged this for Staff attention.
Is there a particular page or post that is mentioned by your visitors?
-
thank you so much!!
It is so strange that this is happening.
I will check with them to see if they remember what page.
-
You’re welcome.
PS I’m the one responsible for the steep climb in your stats, but so far I haven’t encountered anything unusual.

I logged out and switched to Chrome from Firefox and all I see at the end of your posts are ads promoting WordPressdotcom. Ad content on your site is delivered depending on where your site visitor is from.
What I did get while visiting in Chrome is a warning from my Malwarebytes Anti-Malware program that the ad bidding software used to determine those ads is blocked. That pop-up notification from Malwarebytes (not WordPressdotcom) stopped showing up after browsing a few posts.
But please still ask your visitors about where and what they saw. If they can take screenshots (I wasn’t fast enough) and send them to you, even better. https://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/ You can upload the screenshots to your site’s Media Library for Staff to take a look at.

Thank you so much for taking the time to do this Jen. I really appreciate it.
Has this ever happened to you before while visiting a wordpress site? (getting a warning from malwarebytes)?
these were the other reports:
ONE:
I got a constant pop up from iOS. I kept closing it and it kept popping back up. I haven’t gotten it on any other site. I visited your site using my iPhone and It was an add for iOS saying something about qualifying for a new iPhone 7. I can’t remember exactly but it happened on several different pages. And no I never had it happen before on your siteTWO:
I did get a notice telling me that someone was trying to put pop-ups on my screen. It happened to me on the Home Page. The pop-ups were blocked by my computer, so I just got a message saying that “somebody” was trying to get my computer to accept these messages. Only happened once, about two weeks ago.THREE:
It made stuff pop up on my screen and won’t go away. It was some game spinning thing. Then something saying I won free spins. I shut it down the first time but then the second time same things happened. It is not happening to me on any other sites. Just this one. -
I doubt I am going to be able to get a screen shot, since my computer isn’t showing these pop ups.
Is there a way a staff person can still respond to this?

Hello again, your thread is still tagged for Staff. Being a holiday weekend in most places it seems that replies are taking longer than usual. They’ll answer as they return to the forums.

Thank you for your patience :) I’m not able to replicate the pop up warning in Chrome, Safari or Firefox. I’ll keep working and post an update back here with more details (hopefully tonight).

Thank you Miss Happiness Engineer!
My site is a free site for people (like me) who are poor and disabled. I appreciate your help.

Hi again –
I’ve not been able to reproduce the pop up warning. What I can do is disable the ads on your site which should prevent this warning from ever showing again. I’ve removed the ads already, let me know if there’s anything else I can help you with :) Best wishes!

@sleepiergirl – you’re most welcome and sorry for being late. I didn’t get an email notice for your replies even though I was subscribed to this thread; Only staff-zinnia’s last reply pinged me. How utterly strange that! So it goes.
