Pop-up adverts/spam when reading through Facebook
-
Hello, I’ve been a very happy WordPress writer for five years – thank you so much for providing this! A friend tells me that when she clicks through from Facebook to read my post, the screen is covered with a spam popup (iPhone giveaway, fake Sainsbury’s gift card) – she can’t close the popup to read my page and has to close the browser.
I’m on the free plan, so I understand that there is some advertising, but this feels not great because it effectively renders my content unavailable and there is a risk that my readers would be the victims of fraud, and suffer a loss as a result of trying to read my blog.
Please can you advise.
Many thanks,
FelicityThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’ve got this problem too with my site:
theredsquirrelnews.wordpress.comIt’s happened with me and other people more than once now and it’s going to put people off reading my articles.
I know it’s a free plan but spammy, fraudulent adverts aren’t what I signed up for.How do I stop them from happening?

Hi folks, does this *only* happen when clicking through from Facebook to WordPress? We’re hoping to figure this out. If you can verify whether that’s the case, that would help. Thanks!

This is happening to me when I click through from Instagram and when I load it in Safari or Chrome on my phone.

This doesn’t happen when I load in Chrome or Safari on my computer. No ad block used.

Happens when I click through from Facebook but also when I preview the post using the official WordPress app :/
-
It’s also happening on my blog also in the last few days. When I’m in Facebook app but also a browser. iPhone and fake Sainsbury’s pop up ads.
-
I’m not sure if this is related but I just got a security warning when I tried to visit a friend’s blog on WordPress (via Instagram on my laptop Chrome browser). Screenshot: blob:https://wordpress.com/59f8302d-9790-4db9-a6a5-6c1f03116ffc

Also just to make sure I mentioned it, the pop ups occur when viewing my blog posts/website via Twitter on my iPhone. I don’t believe it has ever happened on my laptop. I did make sure my iPhone has pop-ups blocked and it has seemed to help, I won’t know for sure until some time has gone by but I am hoping it won’t happen anymore.
I really appreciate everyone’s input and help. Thank You :)

Hi Liz and Supernovia,
It’s not just clicking through Facebook – also on Safari on the iPhone. Doesn’t seem to affect desktop views that I know of.
Thanks so much for looking into this!

Wow, yeah, that’s not right.
I’ll update our ads team with the information you’ve all sent. Thank you for your patience!

@ergonjon thanks – no those kinds of ads are definitely not appropriate here. We’re working with our ad partner to figure out how these are coming through & will hopefully have a fix soon. In the meantime, do get screenshots when you see these so we’ll know what site they’re coming from. Thanks!

The same thing is happening whenever I visit my blog ( https://thebookcrunch.wordpress.com/ ) on my iPhone, either through an app or just on Safari. I have a screenshot, and the URL it took me to was: secure.kingmodonlex.info (this was through Facebook, and it came up as a scam from Sainsbury’s).

I have been having the same problem on my blog entropy-along-the-way.com
I tried changing the Theme and I thought this fixed it, but it has just happened again. Seems to only happen from iPhones/iPads, not from lap tops.
The pop up takes over the screen and says something about clicking to update the iPhone. It stops you from viewing the rest of the blog.
It doesn’t come up every time you view it, just occasionally. How can I get rid of this please? :)
-
I should add, this comes up from both facebook links to my site, and when I access it from the WordPress app directly.

Thank you folks. Keep the links / screenshots coming and we’ll let you know what we find out.
