Pop ups on my blog

  • Unknown's avatar

I write a wordPress blog,This evening I have had a comment to a post from today (I write about once a month,) from a reader to say that she would love to read my blog but hates the adverts (I understand about the adverts, and it is my choice to use the free site, but she says there is a Google spam thing popping up and taking over my iPad. I’ve tricked it I to letting me down here to let you know but I’m not happy about the pop Up!. How has this happened, and is it anything I have done?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

I don’t see any ad popping up when I visit your blog and its posts. Can you please send me a screenshot of that ad so I can further investigate this? Here’s how to take a screenshot:

I am sorry, but my first query was rather muddled. I had a comment from a reader of my latest post to do with how she could see the post on her iPad. This was her comment: ‘Hi Di, would love to read your post but as well as having annoying adverts there is a Google spam thing popping up and taking over my iPad. I’ve tricked it I to letting me down here to let you know but I’m not happy about the pop Up!’ My question is, how has the pop-up come about. Other than apologise to her, I cannot help her.

  • Hi there,

This is currently an issue across the entire ad industry. You can find more more information about similar problems here: https://www.wired.com/story/pop-up-mobile-ads-surge-as-sites-scramble-to-stop-them/

We take ad quality very seriously, and do our best to identify any bad ads such as these and remove them as quickly as possible, but we need some information to be able to track down the ads in question.

Please ask that reader to send us as much of the following info as possible:

    • Their device, browser and operating system.
    • Their IP address (they can find this by visiting whatismyip.com from the device where they’re seeing the ads
    • The exact URL of the page/post that showed the ad.
    • What was being advertised.
    • The URL that the ad takes them to.
    • If possible, a screenshot of the ad itself that hijacked the browser.

These details can also be submitted to us privately via the form at https://en.support.wordpress.com/about-these-ads/

Thank you for this, I will do my best.

This is happening on my blog as well, here is the info you requested above:

    Device/iOS/Browser: iPhone 6s, version 12.0.1, Safari

    IP address: [redacted]

    URL: https://rabitstew.wordpress.com

What was being advertised: I went to the URL a number of times and they are all different – $1000 Amazon or Walmart gift card, a “special reward”, an anniversary celebration to AT&T loyalty users, etc.

The URL the ad takes me to: 2 ads took me to happy.goodluckspace.com, and another took me to https://bestgiftsforddplayers.desi/9d0a2a08fcf18d1d5d5d4aed1f09e99a/index.html?isp=AT%26T%20Corp.&trackid=201812121503512101#

I cleared my browsing history, removed cookies and tried in private browsing mode, airplane mode, etc… nothing stops this from happening.

  • @jackimiec,

Thank you, but sensitive information like an IP address should not be posted here in the public support forums. That’s why I asked above that the OP should submit these details via the form at https://en.support.wordpress.com/about-these-ads/

I’ve removed the sensitive info from your post and have relayed the information to our ads team to investigate.
