Popup thumbnail photo upon hover over HTML table cell?
-
I’m running a non-profit blog to help my graduating senior class. We’re trying to find everyone (25 years later) to let them know about he reunion. You can see my initial attempt at http://mountaincrest1987.wordpress.com/classmate-contact/. When the classmates hover over a name, I’d like to have a little image of the missing classmate’s graduation photo come up, so people can associates faces with names. Is this possible with the free WordPress features, or do I need to upgrade in order to be able to do custom HTML/CSS?

No upgrade available on WordPress.com will give you the functionality of what you are asking for. A “pop-up” requires javascript, which we cannot use, and we cannot edit the underlying HTML or PHP on WordPress.com. We can edit CSS with an upgrade, but CSS cannot be used in the way you want.
The best you can do is put everyone’s picture in a Gallery which displays thumbnail images. When clicked on it will appear in a full screen Photo Carousel. http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/

Thank you! Shortly after posting to the forum, I did run across the “FancyZoom” plugin for WordPress which does what I’m looking for. Unfortunately, that requires the upgrade, which the senior class organization will probably not spring for.
I may experiment with the embedded Excel feature mentioned here.

Again, just so it is clear, there is no upgrade on WordPress.com that will give you the ability to use plugins.
Please read this for clarity on the differences between free hosted WordPress.com and the standalone WordPress software. http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
