Port theme – Can you have photo galleries displayed using 3 hierarchal levels
-
What I am trying to achieve is to display my photographs from the Homepage Portfolio in 3 hierarchal levels; Continents > Country > Photos
1. From Portfolio click Continent
2. From the list of countries from that Continent, select a country
3. The photo gallery displays for the selected country. At any particular photo, click to enlarge and display photo in a sliderThe Port theme uses Projects and Project types rather than categories and I can see no way to link these together to create the photo galleries.
I’ve been through the documentation and spoken to Port support.

I’ll reply over in your other thread to avoid duplication.

Hi. The following may represent a possible solution, or at least a workaround that you might want to consider.
The Animated Portfolios section of the Port theme guide says:
Port has built-in support for Portfolios. Creating and managing your projects has never been easier. The portfolio page template displays your projects by category with smooth animation effects.
and the Port demo portfolio displays a menu above the projects which includes an “All” link and five category links. Clicking on the “All” link will display all of the projects. Clicking on one of the category links will display only projects in that category. It’s not clear whether these categories represent project types because each of the URLs corresponding to the five categories is the same, the portfolio URL with a “#” symbol appended to the end of it. This example in the demo seems to approach what you’ve described. I was devising another far more complicated solution when I noticed that the demo had already provided this possible solution.
In the case you’ve described, each of the continents included could be one of the categories in the menu above the projects on the portfolio page. While you might prefer the continents to be represented by images in a grid, perhaps the category menu would suffice. If the categories in the menu represent project types, then you’d simply add the appropriate project type to each of the projects.
For example, there might 195 projects, one for each country in the world, and 7 categories, one for each continent. The menu on the portfolio page would include a category for each of the 7 continents, and clicking on any item in the menu would display only those projects in that category/continent. Each project (country) could have its own gallery, with the carousel enabled by checking the box labeled “Display images in full-size carousel slideshow” at Settings > Media > Image Gallery Carousel > Enable carousel.
Questions:
I’ve addressed a number of questions privately to staff that I have regarding the Port demo portfolio page. Here’s a summary of those questions.- Do the items in the category menu on the Port demo portfolio page represent “project types,” as would be expected, or “categories,” which ordinarily aren’t available on a project? Confusion arises from the opposing facts that the Animated Portfolios section of the Port theme guide indicates that this feature, which includes a category menu, is available on a page with the portfolio page template assigned to it, and yet the page displaying the category menu in the demo has the slug “portfolio,” which would suggest that it’s not a static page but rather the automatically generated portfolio page of the site, which has no editor, is not a static page, and therefore cannot be assigned a page template. Typically on a WordPress.com site, if one disables portfolio projects, then one may create a static page with the slug “portfolio.” But in that case projects will not be able to be created on the site. How does the Port demo portfolio page get around this dilemma?
- How is the category menu in the demo’s Portfolio page built? This may be clarified in the Customizer or elsewhere after purchase of the theme.
- If they are project types, then why are they referred to as categories in the Port theme guide?
-
The following question should have been separate, and listed third, rather than part of the first question:
Do the items in the category menu on the Port demo portfolio page represent “project types,” as would be expected, or “categories,” which ordinarily aren’t available on a project?

The questions in my first post above should have been ordered like so:
