portfolio archive missing portfolio shortcode issues in sketch theme
-
Hi, looked for the solution but only found the troubleshooting section which says to disable then re-enable portfolio content – did this and no fix.
I am using the sketch theme and wanted to embed a portfolio project into a post using the shortcode. Every time I attempt to do this, when I preview the post I see this message:
“Your Portfolio Archive currently has no entries. You can start creating them on your dashboard.”
I have several projects in my dashboard > portfolio so I am not sure why I am receiving this message.
Then I went to the portfolio shortcode support page and looked for the url to see my project archive just so I could confirm whether or not there is no archive linked to my portfolio. The support page suggests that the Sketch theme will have “specific styles for the project archives and portfolio shortcodes” but this is not entirely accurate, at least not for Sketch, though, yes, the sketch theme page offers a url example to find your project archives, it does not give you any new or different shortcodes than the portfolio shortcode page in WP support.
It does not give you specific shortcodes that are specific to the Sketch theme.
Can anyone help resolve this or know why I am receiving the message about no portfolio archive?
Note: While the message I see in my post says: “Your Portfolio Archive currently has no entries. You can start creating them on your dashboard.”
The lingo in portfolio shortcode support and Sketch says: “Project Archives” no mention of portfolio archives and so I am wondering:
how to use the short codes in my theme?
if there are theme specific shortcodes, where can I find them?
Also, how does one create multiple portfolios so that some projects can go into one portfolio and others will stay on my homepage? I don’t want my homepage to include all of my projects. I thought I would just create another page with the portfolio short codes which would allow me only to display specific project types, but since they aren’t working for me in my theme, how should I do this?
My blog site is here http://snappingtwig.com/ – Thanks for any help you can offer…

I figured out why I was receiving the message about not having a portfolio archive, but I am still having trouble using the shortcode in the sketch theme to create another page with projects – I do not want all the projects on my home page but when I try to use the shortcode to create another portfolio page, it does not work – it is still lumping all the projects together even while adding the specific project type slug and I tried using the project tag slug as well – still all showing up together. Why doesn’t the portfolio shortcode work in Sketch and if that is not the issue, then what is? Please help… Thanks.

Hi Nicole,
I’m sorry for the troubles that you’ve been having with your Portfolio/Projects.
It might help to clarify something really quickly. “Portfolios” is really nothing more than a special post type. We tweaked posts so that they displayed in a slightly different way and they are called individual posts “Projects” under the header of Portfolios. In reality they are not much different from posts or pages.
There is no way to create multiple Portfolios because that is the post type not a grouping of posts.. I know that it seems like you should be able to because most people have multiple portfolios for their different types of work, but that is not how this was designed.
Instead, we have Project Types and Project Tags. You can group your Projects that way instead.
So with all of that said, if you are having problems with the portfolio shortcode, I’ll be happy to take a look at it. If you would like to only display some of your work on a certain page, I would recommend tagging or typing it with a certain term and then using the shortcode to only display those projects.

Thanks for you help. I understand, and I do love the theme and WP. It must be annoying how everyone is ready to pull their hair out by the time they come here… Sorry for any unnecessary frustrations that may have been felt in your direction.
I was confused because I thought I would be able to split the projects and have them in two seperate pages, but that doesn’t appear to be possible while using the portfolio template as my home page. Not without also using the shortcode, and not the template to change which projects are visible on my home page. I didn’t want to have to do that because then I would lose the cool slider at the top of the portfolio template… I saw another site using the Sketch theme and they have somehow done this while keeping the template on their home page. They either back dated some posts and put a minimum number of projects showing on their front page to do this, or they must have the upgrade if what we’re saying is that its not possible to do this without having all the projects show up on the page using the portfolio template.
I do know that we can’t make multiple portfolios or at least that is what I thought which is why it was so confusing to see that message in my post when I tried to use the shortcode. I took a screen shot of it just in case anyone needed to see it.
Anyway, I think its ok and I understand now based on your response though I might upgrade if I decide I need it to do what I was describing, but for the most part – it does what I want and is great.
Thank you so much for your help. I do really appreciate it.
