Portfolio on Argent theme help
-
I already had a portfolio but decided to change my theme. I have a separate page for portfolio and want to display ALL of my projects there while three on the homepage like in the theme example of Argent.
I’ve got as far as seeing the three on homepage but it is then only showing three on the portfolio page because if I change ‘number to display on home page’ it is effecting the portfolio page. This is because I have the page attribute on portfolio page to front page template as it doesn’t list any others, it would be helpful if it had the portfolio template like my previous theme I used. I have read forums on here which lead me to this: http://docs.kadencethemes.com/virtue-free/portfolio-page-template/
I barley have any of these options, all I need is ‘items per page’ so I can change it to ALL. Is this because I have a free plan so I don’t get as many options?
I hope someone can help me display my full portfolio!

Hi,
I’ve got as far as seeing the three on homepage but it is then only showing three on the portfolio page because if I change ‘number to display on home page’ it is effecting the portfolio page.
I was unable to reproduce this error on a test site with Argent activated, but I’ll call for staff attention so they can have a look. Staff will respond here.
Example 1:
- I created and published six (6) portfolio projects on a test site.
- At My Sites > Manage > Settings > Writing, I set the projects per page setting to “3.”
- At Customize > Theme Options > Front Page Portfolio section settings > Number of Projects to display, I selected “6.”
- Result: The homepage with the Front Page template displays 6 projects, while the portfolio page displays only the most recent 3.
This is because I have the page attribute on portfolio page to front page template as it doesn’t list any others…
The Front Page template on Argent includes a portfolio section where you may display the 3, 6, or 9 most recent projects, so the Portfolio Page template is unnecessary.
I have read forums on here which lead me to this: http://docs.kadencethemes.com/virtue-free/portfolio-page-template/
The page linked to there appears to refer to a third-party theme and may include obsolete information as well. I’d suggest you refer instead to the following WordPress.com support documents:
- Argent theme guide
- Portfolios support page
- Template section of the Page Attributes support page
I barley have any of these options, all I need is ‘items per page’ so I can change it to ALL. Is this because I have a free plan so I don’t get as many options?
The settings I’ve described above are available on the free plan.

Thank you for your quick response!
With your result, 6 projects being on the homepage and 3 being on the portfolio page, how would you flip that so only 3 show on front page and all of my projects show on the portfolio page?
• I have published 5 projects
• At My Sites > Manage > Settings > Writing, I put this to 10 to hope it would show all.
• Customize > Theme Options > Front Page Portfolio section settings > Number of Projects to display, I selected 3 because I wanted only 3 on home page.
• And my result speaks for itself with just 3 on both pages. The above makes sense to why, but there must be an easy way to display all of my projects on portfolio page and just 3 on the homepage.
I understand that Argent themes front page already includes the portfolio template. But on my portfolio page I am then using the front page template as well as using it on my actual front page, which makes sense to why it is only showing 3 because as above I have selected on front page to show 3. However, using the default template it does not show anything on portfolio page, this is why I thought using the portfolio template, if there was the option, would solve my issue (as did on previous theme).
I hope this made sense!

This is embarrassing my phone was logged onto a different WordPress account (not mine) and posted under that! Sorry, the above is also me. Please respond to this instead.
-
No worries, Emma. I see what the issue is, and will try to explain.
The portfolio page on a WordPress.com is an in-built dynamic page that exists at the time of the site’s creation. Its URL is the site URL with the slug “portfolio” appended to the end. So yours is
https://emmasmediasite.wordpress.com/portfolio/
There you will find all five of your published projects displayed. The static page that your “Portfolio” menu item links to isn’t the in-built portfolio page. Notice the slug “portfolio-2” in the URL. Like the homepage, this static page evidently has the Front Page template assigned to, and that’s why it displays only 3 projects, because of the setting at Customize > Theme Options > Front Page Portfolio section settings.

Here’s a link to your portfolio page with the five projects displayed: https://emmasmediasite.wordpress.com/portfolio/. I forgot that the putting it in a code box would break the link.
-
Okay that makes sense, so is there no way of making my static portfolio page show them all?
I’m assuming there is a way to embed the http://www.emmasmediasite.wordpress.com/portfolio/ on to the static page?
-
Yes, I was just about to get to that. You can insert portfolio shortcode into a static page (or a post, text widget, etc.) and either display all the projects there or customize it to display as many of them as you like. See the Portfolio Shortcode support page, and it’s “showposts” attribute. The number of projects displayed by portfolio shortcode is independent of the other two “number” settings we’ve been talking about.
-
Try, for example, the following shortcode in the HTML editor of a static page:
[portfolio showposts=5]
You customize it more using the attributes found here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/portfolios/portfolio-shortcode/#attributes. -
-
However, if you insert portfolio shortcode in a static page, then don’t use the front page template in that page on the Argent theme. Otherwise, you’ll be displaying the portfolio, or at least parts of it, twice.
-
Okay that makes sense. I just tired some examples and previewed them instead of posting. By doing this shortcode like this will it only look like a post rather than the picture with title over the top as shown already on my portfolio?
It’s definitely long winded for something I thought was simple!
-
Yeah, the grid displayed by the shortcode doesn’t look the same. The titles appear below the images. That’s because the titles over the images is a stylized effect that’s part of the Front Page template.
-
-
Okay thank you for your help.
The Argent theme example makes it look too easy, I definitely think WordPress could make it easier to look like the example and demo they give.
Although I haven’t completely solved it to look the same, I have been able to learn more about the shortcodes etc so thank you!

You’re welcome!
There are some customization options on the in-built portfolio page, aka the portfolio archive page, at Customize > Portfolio, including the following: title, content, and featured Image.
So, for example, if you wanted the description present in the content of the static page titled Portfolio to be included in the Portfolio archive page, you may simply copy and paste that description into the box labeled “Portfolio Archive Content” at Customize > Portfolio, and then click the publish button to save the edit.
Then the menu item presently linked to the static Portfolio page could be replaced by an item linked to the Portfolio archive page.
-
Doing as I’ve described in the previous post would result in an archive page that has the following:
1. project titles appearing over the images rather than below them
2. as many projects displayed as set at My Sites > Manage > Settings > Writing
3. the same content as the static page (The portfolio archive title can also be modified, and a featured image may be added if desired.) -
Okay thank you. Would you be able to explain further on replacing the menu item linked to the static portfolio page to an item that is linked to my portfolio archive.
-
I think I have solved it! Take a look, I went into menus and added a custom link instead of it being a page.
