In the Sketch theme, you can set up a page using the Portfolio Page Template, and that portfolio template uses the number of projects defined in your Portfolio Projects Writing Settings. You can find a guide to setting up that Portfolio Page Template here:
    https://wordpress.com/themes/sketch/

As the theme works now, only the Portfolio Page Template uses that setting under Settings > Writing in your site’s dashboard.

Other pages in the Sketch theme will display the number of posts or projects according to the “blog pages show at most” setting under Settings > Reading in your site’s dashboard, rather than using the setting in your Writing settings.

I’m not sure you understood my question…

I understand how to make pages and portfolio pages and how to post portfolio projects.

What I want to know is – That when I post a portfolio project is there a way of making it appear on only one of my portfolio pages. I.e having two or more separate portfolio pages which display different portfolio projects. Currently when I post a portfolio project it shows up on both pages when I only want it to show on one.

    Hi there,

Sure! What you can create are Project Type pages. This allows you to categorize your projects into specific types. When you are creating a project, set a type as seen here:

Then, you can create a Custom Menu and insert project type pages into your menu, which will allow you to show projects only within a certain type on that respective page. You’ll be able to do that when you go to Appearance > Menus in your WP Admin Dashboard as seen here:

Let me know if you have any questions with this!

I have the same problem – in the Sketch theme, I’ve created projects, project types and pages but I can’t figure out how to make certain project thumbnails appear on certain pages – all project thumbnails appear on every page. I’ve read (over and over) the instructions for custom menus but I don’t understand! I’ve spent hours (I have no training in web design or programming). I’ve tried to figure out how to add shortcode, using the example, but I can’t figure out how to instruct a page to show only a single project type.

On my site (lfrenchillustration.wordpress.com), I only see pages in the menu in the upper right – I can’t find a menu of projects anywhere. I can’t see any widgets that I try to add – only that menu. For instance, I add a “contact” widget and set visibility so that it should appear on a static page – but it doesn’t appear on that page! I don’t understand.

    Can someone please help?

    Howdy!

The Portfolio Page template seems to be causing some confusion here.

Whenever you select the Portfolio Page template — as you’ve done on your Illustration and Painting pages — that page template will display every portfolio project, not just a certain type. So the Portfolio Page template probably isn’t for you.

It looks like you want to have some text along with your portfolio projects, so I don’t the Custom Menu is the right choice for you, the portfolio shortcode is a better fit. Let’s follow these steps for your Illustration page:

    1. Edit the page (click here)
    2. Change the page template from “Portfolio Page Template” to “Default Template”
    3. In the body of your page, right after your single image, add this portfolio shortcode:
      [portfolio include_type=illustration]
    4. Click the blue Update button

The result now is that only your projects with the “Illustration” type are displayed at the end of your Illustration page.

I can’t see any widgets that I try to add – only that menu. For instance, I add a “contact” widget and set visibility so that it should appear on a static page – but it doesn’t appear on that page! I don’t understand.

This is another side effect of the Portfolio Page template. There are no widget areas on that template, once you switch the page to the Default template instead, the widget areas will be available again.

And since the shortcode is now displaying the projects, instead of the template, you get the best of both worlds. :)

Thanks very much, Alex! (Sorry for the delayed response.) The step-by-step explanation is really helpful. I obviously didn’t know these things (I’m not sure how I missed it). I easily made changes to my site (still not finished). I have a couple more questions (not about Portfolio Page Templates) but have to get to some other work.

    Thanks again,
    Lisa

    Happy to help, Lisa. :)

Once you’re set with the changes you’re working on, just let me know your other questions and I can help with those too!
