Portfolio pages layout issue with Argent theme

  • Unknown's avatar

In the last few days the layout on all portfolio pages on my blog has started to appear strange, where some images I have added in an image gallery section are all now also appearing very large at the top of the page, above the feature image. Any advice on how to fix this? It seems like a theme issue. The theme I have used is Argent. I changed to another theme briefly and the images disappeared but would really like to stick with Argent.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’m experiencing the same issue – see https://remely.com.au/portfolio/oconnell/

I assume this is a problem in theme and the CSS? Is there are fix and is it going to be applied to the Argent theme?

  • @andrewremely,

This is a bug with the theme, yes. The issue is that WordPress 5.9 introduced a completely new way of creating image galleries:

Originally galleries in WordPress were created via a shortcode that pulled in the image IDs for images from the media library. So if you viewed a post’s HTML in the editor, you wouldn’t see actual references to the images there.

The new Gallery Block in WordPress instead uses individual image blocks, arranged in a grid, so the HTML code contains the actual image URLs, rather than only their IDs.

However, older themes like Argent don’t recognise this new type of gallery as a gallery. It’s still looking for the gallery shortcode in the post, and if it doesn’t see that, assumes there’s no gallery.

We have an open bug report for this, but I cannot tell you if/when it will be fixed.

But if you use the Tiled Gallery block instead, which still uses the old method for creating a gallery, it should work as expected.

P.S., for the most part it’s always better to open your own support request at https://wordpress.com/help/contact, even if you find a forum thread that seems to be for the same issue. This is especially true if the forum thread is already over a month old :)

So there’s a theme available for install etc but there’s a known bug and no plan to fix it…
Any chance you could at least add a note on the Argent theme listing known issues and bugs?

This theme hasn’t been updated since March 2018 and is starting to not be compatible with modern versions of WordPress. With the advancements of the block editor and the Full Site editor, this theme will likely be retired by the end of this year.

I’m bit frustrated here. I understand that it’s not always viable to upgrade a theme to work with new WordPress release etc. But you need to do better at communicating know issues and which ones are being phased out. It is not help to find this only after I go poking around the forums.

    So moving forward…

Can you point me to a list of specific themes that are fully compatible, bug free and are going to be supported into the future. Again, there’s no mention of the phasing out on Argent theme page.

If I’m going to migrate I’d like to pick a replacement theme that’s going to have some ongoing life.

  • Hi there,

You may wish to switch to one of the themes you see listed here: https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/full-site-editing/

All the themes listed there are new, designed specifically to work with the WordPress.com Full Site Editor (allowing you to fully customize your site without the need for code) and will be supported for some time to come.

That is understandable, thank you for sharing that feedback. We’re not able to retroactively communicate that but I’m happy to pass your feedback on to our theme team, thanks.
