Portfolio Projects vs Blog Posts

Can anyone tell me the core differences between portfolio projects and blog posts? I really like the look of the portfolio section of my blog and would like to use it for my normal blog articles going forward. However, I’m afraid this may be a bad decision, as I don’t quite understand how the two types of content are treated. Any advice?

  • Hi there. Portfolio projects are a type of static content, similar to pages, but specifically designed to showcase your work. While you can assign them categories, unlike pages, they do not appear in any feeds, which means your followers won’t be updated if you publish a new project, and they also don’t appear in the tags listings in the Reader. They are also not as thoroughly indexed by search engines as posts are.

Posts, on the other hand, appear in your feed, so subscribers will see them in the Reader and in email notifications. They can also be discovered by people searching for a specific tag in the Reader, and are more likely to show up in search engine results than pages or projects.

Of course you can do whatever you want on your own blog, but projects were not designed to be a substitute for posts and using them that way will all but kill traffic to your site unless you aggressively use other methods like social media to promote new projects.

If you have any more questions, please ask.

Thank you for the thorough reply. That’s what I suspected. Is there anyway to use the portfolio style/theme/area for normal blog posts? It’s just so much better looking. I suppose that’s a theme-specific question, though. So I can ask this elsewhere.

I’m currently interested in the Argent Theme. https://testuptospeed.wordpress.com/

  • Not really. You can hack it by copying your posts into projects and manually updating them each time you create a new post, but that’s really more trouble than it’s worth.

There are several themes that display posts in a grid format, similar to the portfolio page for Argent. You can take a look at the theme with this filter applied: https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/grid-page-template/

Specifically, take a look at these:
