Portfolio theme with category headings?

  • Unknown's avatar

    I am helping someone set up their website to show their paintings, we settled on Sketch but now I have got him going he has asked that the portfolio be split into headings – presumably via categories.

    Are there any WordPress.com afficiandos out there that know of a theme that works that way? I usually develop bespoke WordPress.org themes from the ground up so I’m a bit detached from all this.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi @tahninial,

    Am a volunteer here, but lets see if I can help you.
    Your website is still Private so I can not see it, so please tell a little more how so you want the paintings to look like:
    You want to show paintings on home page in groups, right?
    Each painting has has own page?
    Or you want each page to contain some related paintings?
    What about menu, do you need those categories to be shown in menu?

    I look forward to hearing from you!

    @tahninial,

    Hi. In portfolio projects, portfolio types is the analog to post categories. See the
    Adding and Managing Portfolio Projects and Viewing Portfolio Projects sections for relevant information and instructions. As indicated in the latter, assigning a type to one or more projects automatically creates a portfolio project tag archive page.

    As suggested by @maksimurasove, links to project type archive pages may be added to a custom menu, as described in the Add Menu Items section of the Site Menus support page.

    @maksimurasov,

    Sorry for the misspelling of your name in my post above. : )

    The Portfolio Shortcode support page may also be helpful

    Thank you so much, apologies for the delay in replying.

    I think the shortcode approach is going to be the solution, it’s unfortunate it doesn’t take on the theme’s code to display it but it will achieve what the artist wants.

    Have you tried adding portfolio types to some posts, thus creating portfolio type archives? There isn’t a good example in the Sketch demo of a type archive page because there is only one post for every type. However, tag archive pages are analogous. Have a look at the “Poster” project tag archive page in the Sketch demo. The result is very orderly, each thumbnail being the same size, project title underneath each. At customize you can add a description or other content, and a featured image.

    In comparison I found that the customized shortcode option for showing a group of projects of the same type tends to produce a less orderly and attractive result on Sketch.

    On the other hand, as we’ve heard, the customer is always right. : )

    I agree the archive page solution is much more elegant but he wants the homepage to just show the art all on one page (he won’t have many) so I think jumping through hoops with the shortcode is the more client-pleasing option. Thanks again for flagging that up.

    So far I have circumvented the shortcode formatting by uploading each image twice – one cropped to 4:3 to be the featured image and one full frame image to insert in the post itself, as the featured image isn’t automatically displayed by the template.

    If he’s now willing to pay for a package with custom CSS I can probably also deal with the rest but I shall have to see what he says on that!

    For clarification:

    Have you tried adding portfolio types to some posts…

    I meant assigning “types” to some portfolio projects. I suspect that you know what meant, but I’m not sure. Are you displaying posts or portfolio projects on the front page, because on WordPress.com these are two different content types, with some similarities?

    I agree the archive page solution is much more elegant but he wants the homepage to just show the art all on one page (he won’t have many)

    Okay, I think I’ve got the picture now. All of the art on the homepage, but divided in to different sections, different categories, is that right?

    Another alternative to consider might be to have the homepage (a static page) composed of sections stacked on top of each other, with each section containing Image Blocks within a Columns Block, and each image linked to it’s own page or portfolio project elsewhere on the site. An Images inserted into an image block can be linked to a custom URL as described in the Link Settings section of the Image Block support page.

    Perhaps even a stack of galleries on the front page? (see Gallery Blocks)

    I haven’t used blocks much because I prefer the older Classic Editor which doesn’t use blocks, so if the blocks within blocks idea interests you and you’d like detailed info regarding that, or if you’d like more suggestions (other suitable ideas), I’d recommend adding a “modlook” tag to the sidebar of this thread to call for staff attention. If you do so, then staff will respond here.

    Are there any WordPress.com afficiandos out there that know of a theme that works that way?

    Again I’d suggest calling for staff response with the “modlook” tag in the sidebar of the topic.
