You there, Titi ? – or am I being ridiculous in terms of time …?
I would be most grateful for input on this topic: I do not comprehend how portfolios work. I know there’s a Support article; but it assumes I have a working brain, and I don’t, really. :-(
My thinking is that I want to have all my posts sort themselves under headings I choose; but that the latest will always remain the first post seen. Does that make sense ?

Hi M-R,
I just read what you’d like to have happen, and I’m not entirely sure but it sounds a bit like you’d like to be able to categorize each post and then be able to link to each of the categories individually, but then also have a normal posts page. Is that correct at all, or am I entirely off base?
If I’m correct, then we already have a help article which goes in to how to do just that. You can find it right here:

Nup, that ain’t it, alas ! – I’m very familiar with Category pages, and have a few running.
You can’t be blamed: I find it almost impossible to describe, it turns out. HOWEVER ! – I’ll have another go, eh …?

to begin with. (I don’t know how to do a hyperlink here. Sorry.)
See how it has all those little image icons arrayed there ?
I had hoped they all represented categories (or portfolios), and would link to a sort of ToC page that listed everything appearing under whatever I chose.
And that the actual blog would commence thereunder.
I read both Support pages about portfolios; but all they did was cause my brain to boil. Blame it on my birthday, mate ! :-( -

Back at you, M-R,
I’m afraid that this theme isn’t going to work in the exact way which you had hoped. If you check out the demo for Mixfolio (http://mixfoliodemo.wordpress.com/), you’ll see that those images work by grabbing the featured image of whatever post has been created. They can’t be modified in the way that you were talking about.
But that said, I think you CAN do what you’re basically looking for though, it just requires a different way of thinking, and it would also require you to move all of your posts into Portfolio projects.
Portfolio projects are basically just posts. They are just tracked in a different part of our system. You will need to make sure that for each post you have set a featured image (it’s important for the appearance of your portfolio).
But as an experiment, you could try copying a few posts over to be portfolio projects. Once they have been moved over, you would want to create a plain old fashioned page and use the portfolio shortcode to create a table of contents. It would display the featured image as a thumbnail and you could control what information is displayed and how many items are shown and how they are arranged from which categories:

What I don’t grasp is that if each POST is a portfolio, how do you manage to link a group of them under one … erhmm … heading ? Doesn’t it make more sense to have the portfolios as the headings and then write (or move) posts to fall under them ?
And if I have an image for each POST, I can’t possibly do it (even if I were ever to understand that true/false stuff) because I’m up to just under [gasp !] 400 posts, now … -
I did indeed link you to one of the support pages, but that’s so that you could see the code that is necessary to get your Table of Contents to show. Sometimes it’s unpleasant, but necessary!
Actually each post is the same as a project underneath the grand umbrella that is your portfolio. So a group of projects can be linked by project types (the same as categories) or by project tags (the same as tags).
Does that make sense? The projects are effectively the same as posts, they’re just called differently.

With your help it’s all becoming somewhat clearer, Ash; but I realize now that the enormous volume of my posts is more than merely daunting.
My mad dream had been that the software would sort of do most of it; but on my site I’d be there till kingdom come.

The scan is done. I’ll get results in 10 -14 days. I’m coping with the health issues but I’m focused on my focused on my voice. I was brought in at the next to last moment. The concert is on the 16th and I have to practice, practice, practice.
