Portfolios

I need help. I need to create a Portfolio, and I need to do it in WordPress.com without spending money. (I am laid off, and money is getting very short.) I need a site to try to find freelance clients. I am a writer, but some of my work is video, etc.

I have spent weeks trying to figure out the Portfolio instructions and find something on line that can help me do it that a) doesn’t tell me to buy a theme, and put it on a host, or b) buy a plan and then install plugins, or c) how to write the correct code.

I built the Portfolio once, but realized I built it (I think) the wrong way. I created a page, used portfolio layout and then added several items and links on that page to the project in the media library. Then I realized I needed to create projects. So I started creating them.

Now, I can’t figure out how to display them. Everything tells me that I should create the projects, and they will ‘automatically’ display — but where, how? It says ‘don’t create a page called Portfolio’ but without one, where do things display?

I see instructions that show something called Portfolio that show a place to set all kinds of things up on the Portfolio page, but I can’t figure out how to get there. I have been in the Administrator, and the regular menus, and when I click on Portfolio, it just shows me projects. It doesn’t show me anything that I can adjust to ‘create a portfolio’ or ‘page’. and as soon as I find a tutorial, it talks about buying themes and hosts and then coding correctly. I end up following instructions okay, until they start talking about creating short codes. I don’t really want to code if I can avoid it, but if I must, I must. I just don’t know much about it. I think there is a block that is called short codes and somewhere I saw a list on which ones to use but they seem very generic and I want to use specific examples I have stored in the media library. I assume I create a project, discuss it, and make a link on that ‘project’ to an example in my media library. Is that not the correct way?

I have another concern directly related to these projects: the things I want to let visitors see are not all images. I have selected pages from workbooks, and some video (that I store on my YouTube private channel and link to), some Power Point samples, and some pdf samples that I got with permission from my former manager. I have tried different ways to package them (since I don’t have Adobe Acrobat except as reader) and tried putting them into short PPT shows as pdf. I did try once doing them as a series of images (jpeg) on a sample page (before I knew about projects, but I could do the same thing there). Then I realized the other day that people were able to download some of these and I would like to stop them from happening. I suspect anything that is a pdf is downloadable, so perhaps I need to just display these as PPTs or jpegs. Some of these I don’t care if they download, as they are only a few pages out of a much larger work, but others I really wish I could stop the downloading.

Can someone who really knows WordPress.com help me?

    THANKS!

You find all info regarding portfolios at https://wordpress.com/support/portfolios/.
You really can’t prevent people from downloading or copying things you put on the internet. You can only make it more difficult to do so, https://wordpress.com/support/prevent-content-theft/
