Portfolios

Hi. I’m creating a new site for a weekly writer/actor workshop. Basically I’m creating a site that the writers and actors can go to to check the upcoming schedule and for the writers to choose the actors they’ll be casting for their scenes. With this in mind, I need a page for each actor in the group with their headshot and basic contact info. And I need a main actor page that will display all of their headshots as thumbnails (or around that size) so that the writers can quickly scroll down that page, click on the actor’s headshot and be taken to that particular actor’s page on the site. When I chatted with someone from wordpress the other day, they said I should use a ‘portfolio’ on my site which will allow me to easily update the actor pages. (The actors will be listed alphabetically and I need to be able to easily add a new actor without having to manually shift around all the other photos whenever I do this) I was also suggested the Editor Theme, which I’ve started using to build the site. I’ve activated the portfolio feature and I’ve added a couple of projects in there. Now, I’m confused what to do next. How do I display the portfolio? Furthermore, how do I create the main actor page with thumbnails? How do I have it list alphabetically? Any/all help is appreciated. Please be as detailed as possible as this is completely stumping me. Thanks!

    re: switching themes
Every theme has a detailed theme description page with set-up instructions and a live demo site. Here’s an example of the detailed theme description page here https://wordpress.com/themes/goran/ and a live demo site here https://gorandemo.wordpress.com/

Switching themes can be easily done, provided you are logged in as Admin under the same username account that registered the site. Themes are just “skins” on WordPress.COM hosted blogs. You can quickly and easily change themes on any WordPress.COM hosted blog to another one found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and no data will be lost or negatively affected by the change. The only time you may have to do a lot of work is if you are changing to a dramatically different theme with different features and/or if you have done any CSS editing.

Provided you are logged in as Admin under the same username account that registered the blog go to Dashboard > Appearance > Themes, Browse themes until you find one you like and click the “activate” or the “preview” link, or type in the name of the theme you want to use when it appears.

The theme customizer https://en.support.wordpress.com/customizer/ provides a preview function for exactly that purpose ie. so you can view what a theme will appear like prior to changing one.

  • To be honest, what you are trying to do is not going to be easy on WordPress.com. I’m not saying that it isn’t possible, but I’m saying that it will involve more manual work than you are probably expecting.

You might look into seeing if there is a WordPress.org plugin that suits your needs and then look into setting up a self-hosted WordPress site:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org
