What is a portfolio in WordPress? How is it different from a page or a post?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hello,

Portfolio is a content type used for grouping projects together. For example, if you were a keen photographer you might choose to showcase a selection of your best images in a portfolio rather than as posts on your blog or images on a page. You might have a ‘landscapes’ project and a ‘portraits’ project.

Portfolio content is grouped together to make it easier to manage (for you) and easier to find (for visitors).

You can learn more about portfolio content in this documentation: https://en.support.wordpress.com/portfolios/

Hope that makes thing a little clearer.

    Hi Gemma,

Can you tell me how I create a ‘sub group’ within my portfolios?

For example I have 2 portfolios: Writing and Photography, both of which display on wanderupon.wordpress.com/portfolios

From there, I would like to click on Photography to take me to the sub-categories of People, Places and Things.

    Create a Portfolio Website

implied that it was just a case of re-writing the slug after /portfolio but that doesn’t work for me – it just merges everything together

    e.g. wanderupon.wordpress.com/photography/people defaults to photographypeople

Your help would be much appreciated!

    Hi Sarah,

From what I can see, it looks as though you have already set up the Writing and Photography project types in your portfolio.

If you want to add People, Places and Things as sub groups within the Photography project type like this:

    Photography
    > People
    > Places
    > Things

You can do so using the following method:

    • Go to the Portfolio section in your WP Admin dashboard and click on Project Types (this is a direct link to that section).
    • Under the Add New Project Type heading, add the name of the sub group you wish to create. For this example I will use People.
    • In the Parent, drop down box, select Photography
    • Click the Add New Project Type button and you will see People appear underneath Photography in the list on that page.

Does that help? Let me know how you get on.

Sorry Sarah, this is the link to your Project Types.

    Hi Gemma,

    Thank you that’s really helpful!

One more thing… If I want the 3 ‘portfolio’ categories (e.g. photography, writing, biography) to display on the front page as 3 featured images that link through to the correct portfolio pages is that possible with simple wordpress.com?

    Thank you,
    Sarah

I was thinking that the way to do this would be to create another project type called ‘home’ for example

And then select project type ‘home’ in addition to say ‘photography’ for the photography portfolio so it would display on both ‘home’ and ‘photography’ portfolio pages but this didn’t seem to work.

    Maybe I’m over complicating..!?

    Hi @balconyinbloom

Yes, one option is to create a page for each project type and use Portfolio Shortcodes.

However, I would suggest opening a new thread in the WordPress.com Theme forum so your questions can be answered separately from this original thread. Someone there may have more experience with the Sketch theme and be able to offer another solution.

    Best of luck!
