Possible bug: Altofocus-Gallery Slideshows

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m using the Altofocus theme on my photoblog and it seems that the results for creating a gallery slideshow do not match the description in the theme support page:

AltoFocus beautifully responds to not only single-image posts but also full galleries. If you would prefer to forego a single featured image above your post and use this space to showcase an entire set of photos, insert a gallery into your post and select the “Slideshow” display option — we’ll take care of the rest.

However, I’m getting the standard Gallery slideshow (black background) and it looks like this is also happening on the demo site as well. Please see:

    and

    Thanks for looking.

  • Hi Jennifer,

That does look like something’s not working right. I’ll follow up with the developer who created that theme. Thanks for reporting.

  • It looks like this might be related to bug in Content Options that was recently fixed. Can you please go to the Customizer and just resave the featured image settings under content options? Uncheck a box, save, and then check it again. Specifically, the “featured image on single post” should be selected when you’re done.

If that doesn’t fix the slider on your site, can you please give a link to a post where it’s not working?

OK-I’ve done that now and it looks to be working as described. Thank you for adding a mention of that setting to the theme page. :) I had the “Automatically use first image in post” checked and it still is. Should I uncheck that? There’s still no image on the blog’s front page for this post.

The previous/next image arrows in the post extend out over the edges of my monitor 1280 pixels wide.

And this is now the third time that the order of the images in the Gallery slideshow is messed up. (sigh) Fortunately this time I noticed the ellipsis with the sort options on the Gallery edit screen.

I see you also now have a featured image set in the editor for that post. Did you add that afterwards? That post is now showing a thumbnail image on the front page for me:

The previous/next image arrows in the post extend out over the edges of my monitor 1280 pixels wide.

Confirmed. I’ve reported that to the team to fix.

And this is now the third time that the order of the images in the Gallery slideshow is messed up.

Messed up in which way? It should be in the order the images were selected when you created the gallery, unless you manually changed the order when configuring the gallery settings.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Did you add that afterwards?

    Yes, I did.

Given my selection of “Automatically use first image in post” in the Customizer, I was expecting to see something. But perhaps when using a Gallery at the beginning of the post that front page image function isn’t applied. (?)

    Messed up in which way?

The order of the Gallery images kept changing when I edited and resaved the Gallery/post, but can’t remember whether it was before or after I published it (it was a scheduled post). At first I selected a Tiled Mosaic Gallery, then after reading the theme documentation I switched to Slideshow. Both times the image order was randomly generated, although I did not select that option.

Fortunately I named the images in order (01-20) before I uploaded them so it was easily corrected this last time with the sort options. I honestly don’t recall having seen the ellipsis with the sort options previously. (More coffee? Less coffee?)

Just adding that the resulting Publicize tweet of that post was without an image (but I won’t run it through the debugger just yet).

  • But perhaps when using a Gallery at the beginning of the post that front page image function isn’t applied

It seems that way, but this might be unintentional. I’ll report that as well for the devs to look into.

The order of the Gallery images kept changing when I edited and resaved the Gallery/post,

It looks like this might be an issue with galleries in general, and not with the theme. Does this look like the same issue as you’re experiencing? If so, do you have any additional information or steps we can add to that bug report?

    https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso/issues/14843

Regarding Publicize, I see an error on FB’s debugger seeming to indicate they didn’t even try to fetch the preview, but it was showing the image you’ve now set as featured both before and after I rescraped. I’ve read that FB is making changes to their Graph API, so could be related to that, but please let me know if this keeps happening.

I’ll report that as well for the devs to look into.

    Thanks.

Does this look like the same issue as you’re experiencing?

Perhaps. If I have time later I’ll check again on a test post following the steps outlined in that bug report and let you know.

I see an error on FB’s debugger

Publicize was to twitter, not FB, if that matters.

Here’s what I know so far:

https://teachandtestsite.wordpress.com/2017/06/21/gallery-test-post-calypso/ (Private test site) duplicated the results indicated at https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso/issues/14843

Furthermore, using Altofocus, changing the Gallery style from Tiled Mosaic to Slideshow failed to generate the header gallery of images, as mentioned previously.

Changing the Gallery type from Tiled Mosaic to Slideshow removed the post’s featured image from the site’s front page.

I also created and tested a post in WP Admin, where the image sort order was maintained, but that post also failed to generate the Altofocus Gallery header.

Thanks. That’s all the time I have for this today.

  • (Private test site) duplicated the results indicated at https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso/issues/14843

Thanks for confirming. So that’s a separate issue unrelated to the theme.

Changing the Gallery type from Tiled Mosaic to Slideshow removed the post’s featured image from the site’s front page.

That’s without a featured image explicitly set, correct? It’s reported, but it looks like it might be related to content options/galleries rather than the theme.

using Altofocus, changing the Gallery style from Tiled Mosaic to Slideshow failed to generate the header gallery of images

Is this still happening, even after resaving the content options?

Still looking into the Publicize issue, but I suspect that’s related to the slideshow not automatically selecting a featured image – unlike regular galleries, slideshows run in an iframe, so it’s possible they’re “invisible” to the scrapers FB, Twitter, etc uses to fetch the images.

  • Yep, Slideshow setting for the gallery appears to be the key re Publicize. So if we can fix it so a featured image is selected from the slideshow, it should use that image for Publicize as well. I’ll let you know if that’s something that can be fixed, but for now you’ll need to explicitly set a featured image for slideshow posts.

The Content Options on my test site already had “Featured Image – Display on single posts” selected, but unchecking, saving, checking and saving again seems to have activated the header slider. Hopefully users shouldn’t need to do this if they already have this setting ticked. If they do, please document it somewhere.

Thanks for the explanation about the Publicize issue for Gallery Slideshows. Will keep that in mind for future posts.

Regarding the Calypso Gallery spontaneous combustion issue, I’ll use the WP Admin until it is fixed. :D

  • Hopefully users shouldn’t need to do this if they already have this setting ticked. If they do, please document it somewhere.

As I mentioned earlier, that is not an issue with the theme, but instead due to a bug with content options that was fixed some time ago. We have no way of knowing how many users and which themes/features might be affected, so it’s more of a “have you tried turning it off and back on again” scenario. Not really a sensible place where we can document something like that :)

  • Unknown's avatar

How about the FAQ or a troubleshooting section on Content Options?

    Customizer: Content Options

  • I’ll ask the team responsible for that feature :)

  • Posts with a gallery set to slideshow should now correctly use one of the images in the gallery if there’s not a featured image explicitly set.

Still waiting on the issue of the gallery re-ordering itself in the overlay.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thanks for the updates.

  • And just confirmed that social media should now also use a post from the slideshow if you share that post.
