Possible domain error
-
Hi there,
I worked with a support person at WordPress.com to go through transferring my blog from being self-hosted with HostGator back to WordPress.com hosting, where it originally started. I got a note from wordpress.com emailed to me saying:
“Your WordPress import was successful.http://gonebanannasdotcom.wordpress.com
Happy Blogging!
— the WordPress.com team”
I was still having issues with it so I worked with a WordPress.com employee and received this reply:
“I’ve got that fixed for you. The nameservers just needed to be updated to point to WordPress.com again. It can take 24-48 hours for domain/DNS changes to propagate throughout the internet. It typically happens faster than that, but it really depends on your ISPs update frequency. If you are still not seeing the correct site appear after 48 hours has elapsed, please contact me again.
Also, do let me know if you have further questions or if anything is unclear.”
However, if you go to gonebanannas.com or gonebanannasdotcom.wordpress.com it takes you to a HostGator page that basically says Gone Banannas doesn’t exist. (http://gonebanannas.com/cgi-sys/suspendedpage.cgi).
Can you please advise what to do next? I can’t tell if this is a wordpress issue or a hostgator issue? As far as I can tell, this is happening because the move back to wordpress.com wasn’t successful, and since my self-hosting wasn’t renewed per my request, there is just no where for gonebanannas.com to go.
Thank you for your help!

Hey Anna,
If you’d like to use your custom domain with your WordPress.com site, you will need to “point” it here.
I took a look at the public information for your domain, and see the following:
http://who.is/whois/gonebanannas.com
Your name servers are still pointing to Hostgator, rather than WordPress.com. Your name servers should be:
ns1.wordpress.com
ns2.wordpress.com
ns3.wordpress.comYou may need to contact launchpad.com (the domain registrar listed in the link above) and have them assist. We don’t have access to that server, and the change needs to be made on their end.
In the meantime, while you’re waiting for your domain registrar to make these adjustments to your name servers, I’ve temporarily made the WordPress.com URL of your site the primary domain.
You can now go to gonebanannasdotcom.wordpress.com to see your site, and do any editing you’d like while your domain issue is being adjusted.
Once the domain’s settings are changed, you can make gonebanannas.com your primary domain once again, here:
https://gonebanannasdotcom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains
I hope this helps! If you have any other concerns, drop me a note. Thanks much!

Hi there! Thank you very much! I was able to get them to reactivate my old domain and HostGator and I fixed the name servers so that they point at WordPress.com. I had done a lot of updates to my theme and such recently and those have totally disappeared and reverted back to an old version of my site. Any guidance on why that happened and am I able to get it back?
Thank you!

Hi there Anna!
I was able to get them to reactivate my old domain and HostGator and I fixed the name servers so that they point at WordPress.com.
Fabulous! So glad that worked out.

I am wondering…is it possible that you did your updates to your self-hosted site, rather than your WordPress.com site? If that’s the case, those changes to your theme don’t transfer from an outside server, to your WordPress.com theme.
I don’t see any design-related updates made recently to your site here on our servers.
If that isn’t the situation, could you explain where/what you did in more detail, and what you’re seeing instead?
Let me know. Thank you!

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I see. Yes, I had made the changes when I was still self-hosted. Apparently, I am rather tech-challenged when it comes to the whole blog transfer thing. I thought that when I transferred my WordPress.com blog to HostGator that it was the same blog. I didn’t realize that it created a different one and that a WordPress.com blog was still going to exist. In other words, there shouldn’t have been a gonebanannasdotcom.wordpress.com and a gonebanannas.com. It should have all been gonebanannas.com. Does that make sense? Is that even possible? Thanks for working with me to figure all of this out. I’m super bummed to hear that the updates didn’t go through as planned!

Aha! Ok, that does make sense.

No, when you move to a self-hosted site, you may have moved all your content from WordPress.com, but all new content is added only the the new server. The old WordPress.com site is exactly as it was when you left it.
This means that if you have posts/pages from the self-hosted server, you may want to transfer them to WordPress.com. Then, you’ll have all the most up-to-date content on your WordPress.com site.
You’ll run an export from your self-hosted site:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/And an import into your WordPress.com site:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/import/I think a bit of confusion is taking place over the difference between your domain name (gonebanannas.com) and your WordPress.com site (gonebanannas.wordpress.com). I think this document might be helpful:
Also, you might find this guide helpful, if you aren’t sure if you’ve completed all the transfer steps yet:

If you run into any issues, feel free to reply back as we’d be happy to assist.
Thanks again :)

Hello again!
I did an export/import from my self-hosted site to my wordpress.com one a while back and I thought everything came over but it looks like some are missing. Is it possible to import just the posts that are missing or should I go through a full export and import again?
Thank you for your help again!

Adding on:
If you go to this page, https://wordpress.com/posts, (I don’t know if this works for you or if you have to sign in as me to see it) you can see that I have two posts that were from a month ago entitled Frustration Grunt and 5 Instagram accounts as well as my About Me section that just disappeared. Is there a way to get these back?

If you haven’t gone live yet, my suggestions would be to clear out everything that you’ve already uploaded into WordPress.com and run the export/import again. Make certain that you grab all your content, rather than a portion, from the old site.
Also, media that is attached to posts and pages should move over. Media that isn’t attached will most likely need to be moved manually.

I don’t see these either. Were they added to your self-hosted site, or your WordPress.com site? If they came from your self-hosted site, let’s see if the new export/import takes care of the problem.
If you’d rather not clear away the current WordPress.com site you’re working on, but simply want to test the export/import to see if running the process again helps, you can also create a new site called gonebanannastesting.wordpress.com (for instance) and try running the import there. That way, you don’t have to experiment with your public site.
Please let me know how this works out for you, and how I can help once you finish the process.
Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks very much.

So, this might seem like a silly question, but how do I get back to my old site if all the servers are now pointing at my new site?

Hiya Anna!

Not a silly question at all!
If you need to access your WordPress.com site, you can go to your Dashboard panel here:
https://gonebanannasdotcom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/If it’s your self-hosted site that you’re hoping to access, you may need to contact Hostgator and let them know you want access to your site, even though you’ve changed your name servers.
I hope that clears up confusion, but if I can help further, drop me a line. Thanks!

Me again!
The transfer didn’t work correctly but whatever – those two posts are gone!
Moving on, is there away to transfer my subscribers over? The original site has 65 wordpress followers and 21 email subscribers and I was recently alerted that those people aren’t getting notified of my posts anymore. Any guidance you can provide would be great!

Because you’re now posting to WordPress.com, and your subscribers are still at your self-hosted site, they won’t get notifications. However, I can move your followers from your Jetpack/self-hosted site, back to WordPress.com.
I moved a total of 86 subscribers to your WordPress.com site. Those stats may take several hours to appear in your Site Stats.
Can I assist with anything else? Let me know! Thanks :)

Hi again,
I just checked at my subscribers still haven’t aren’t showing up. I only see the 4 followers who recently subscribed.https://wordpress.com/stats/gonebanannasdotcom.wordpress.com
Also, on that same wordpress page, its showing that I have two sites, but one of them has a red circle with an exclamation point in it next to it and that’s the one where I see all my old subscribers.
Thanks!

Hey Anna,
Could you go to your stats page and refresh it, and let me know if you see those subscribers now?
Thanks so much!

Okay, nope it’s still the same issue. If I go to the wordpress.com site with the stats, there is an exclamation next to my site name on the left and no followers. If I go to ‘switch site’ and choose the second one down than all my followers are there. Is there a way to merge both the sites? I don’t even know why there are two separate ones showing. I wish I could add a picture of it to show you but it doesn’t look like that is possible here.
