Possible to back up without paid plan?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have moved my blog back from Tumblr, importing 600+ posts…so it’s been a while since I’ve used wordpress.com. I have a backup from before, but see the backup function is apparently now only available to paid accounts. Am I missing something?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

Here at WordPress.com, we take the security of your site’s data pretty seriously, and this includes a robust system of redundant backups for all the sites we run. From that standpoint, you needn’t worry about backing up your site; we’ve got that covered.

However, because our backups are made at the server level (and include many sites/accounts together) we don’t have a mechanism for preparing individual backups for sites.

Can you clarify what is the missing content you are looking for? I do not see much activity on mydayuruguay.wordpress.com in the two years since it was created, so I would not expect there to be much in the way of missing content.

    Thanks for clarifying.

I brought everything over from a self-hosted WordPress site. I’m not missing content, nor am I publishing anything controversial, but I am aware that WordPress has removed entire sites without warning or appeal (specifically, Jon Rappoport), which is why the idea of a local backup appeals.

It seems my options for that are a 1) paid WordPress.com account (Jetpack backup) or 2) again self-hosting?

On the Free, Personal or Premium plans, you do have the ability to export your content (pages, posts) and also the media library from Tools > Export in the dashboard. You could perhaps do that once a month, week, or more often if you post frequently and felt the need.

The above would not include the site design or theme, but you would have full copies of your content and media.

This yields XML files and unlinked image files. Even after importing the site via xml files to a self-hosted account, the photos are linked to the original source. It may be that a plug-in will import images, but I really want to avoid self-hosted WordPress. Been there, done that ;-)

  • Hello there,

You don’t have to use self-hosted WordPress to use plugins. If you want full site backups taken daily, you can do that on the Business Plan. It would also provide the option to install plugins.

It sounds like the concern is having your site’s content preserved. We won’t ever delete your site unless you delete it yourself. And if there was an issue with the content, we would let you know.

I see that you have a blog, and we’d like to hear more about the overall vision for your site. A paid hosting plan offers additional benefits that can help you achieve what you would like. For example, you get a domain free for the first year with an annual plan. You also get access to many features and more support options:

I’ve been blogging for years (as you can see), mostly for my own amusement. No plans to more with it.

  • Gotcha, that makes sense. Access to backups is a paid feature (as mentioned above) but even for free sites we take the security of your site’s data pretty seriously, and this includes a robust system of redundant backups for all the sites we run.

From that standpoint, you needn’t worry about backing up your site; we’ve got that covered.

However, because our backups are made at the server level (and include many sites/accounts together) we don’t have a mechanism for preparing individual backups for free sites. That is only an option on sites that are upgraded to our Business and Ecommerce plans, since those sites have dedicated resources per-site including totally separate site-specific backups.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
