possible to custumize the search?
-
I am using 2010 and would like to custumize the search a little. Here’s what I want to do,
1. I want only the beginnings of posts to show up in the search results. I know, you will probably say to remove exerpts from all your posts, but then that would only display the beginnings of posts on category and archive pages, where I want the full post shown, that’s why I have exerpts in the first place.
2. It currently says search results for keyword where keyword is the actual keyword you entered. This is fine, except I also want it to say something like either of the following, search results 1-10 of 10 items found for audio or search results for audio, displaying 1-10 of 10. Is there a way I can do this? The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I clicked too soon. It’s my understanding based on reading support documentation and advice from the only two members here who provide CSS editing services free of charge that CSS editing It can only be used to change appearance, and cannot be used to change functionality. I could be wrong but that sure sounds like what you are describing.

What you are wanting would require hacking of the underlying theme files and we don’t have access to those.

Would I be able to do any of what I want? This actually sprung up last night as I was looking at timethief’s blog, he said that you can’t search for pages in the search box, which you can in fact do, but they display like they were posts.

You could on a self-hosted blog as long as you had experience with PHP scripting. It might include creating an entirely new page and then modifying other existing files in the theme so that the search results would show up using the new page type. It could be an easy thing (if you know PHP) or a far more involved thing.
You have to have a good knowledge of PHP because it is very powerful and you can without meaning to leave gaping security holes in your wake and none of us wants to leave doors open for those less than honorable thugs out there.

I might upgrade sometime, but I have no need to do so at this time. I’m sure I could have my friend do it for me, as a couple of years ago he helped me custumize a contact form.

No.
As both of the above volunteers have explained, it cannot be done at WordPress.com. It can be done with WordPress.org. If your friend can do it, he’s obviously pretty good.

Currently only the beginnings of posts do show up in your search results however if you want to show less you could try something like:
body.search .entry-summary {height:1.4em; overflow:hidden;}However the sentences will appear to end half way through in many cases. It is not possible with CSS to achieve your second request as has already been mentioned.

Thanks for the CSS on the first question, I don’t mind sentences being cut off, that’s what Google does I think, so I really don’t mind here.
